'Chilling' Video of Alleged Murder Made Public as Chicago Cop Finally Charged

By 'artificially delaying justice for 400 days,' city officials have 'allowed anger, mistrust and resentment to build up to a fever pitch'.

Updated (9:12 PM EDT):

Under pressure from a court order and amid worries over public outrage over the sheer brutality of the incident and why it took so long to do so (see below), Chicago officials on Tuesday evening released dash cam footage of the 2014 fatal shooting of seventeen-year-old Laquan McDonald by police officer Jason Van Dyke who was earlier in the day indicted for first-degree murder.

Watch (Warning: graphic footage that some may find disturbing):
As the city braced for the expected public release of dash-cam video described by a state prosecutor as "graphic," "violent" and "chilling," a Chicago police officer was finally charged Tuesday with murdering a black teenager in October 2014.

Seventeen-year-old Laquan McDonald was allegedly shot 16 times by Officer Jason Van Dyke, who is white, on October 20, 2014. Witnesses said McDonald, who police claimed was armed with a small knife and under the influence of drugs, was walking away from law enforcement when he was shot and killed by Van Dyke.

In a ruling late last week, a Cook County Circuit Court judge ordered the city to release no later than November 25 the police dash-cam video showing the shooting. For months, the city fought attempts to have the video released to the public, saying it could jeopardize any ongoing investigation.

According to the Chicago Tribune:

The dash-cam video shows Van Dyke jumping out of his squad car and within seconds firing 16 rounds into McDonald, lawyers for McDonald's family have said.

After the first few shots knocked McDonald to the ground, Van Dyke fired another volley that struck the African-American teen repeatedly as his body lay in almost a fetal position on the ground, according to the lawyers.

Even Daniel Herbert, Van Dyke's attorney, has described the video as "graphic, disturbing, and difficult to watch."

The judge's ruling, and the prospect of the video's imminent public release, spurred Cook County State's Attorney Anita Alvarez to charge Van Dyke, who is 37. The officer turned himself into authorities Tuesday morning and has been ordered held without bail.

Writing in the New York Daily News, journalist and activist Shaun King argued that official outrage over the video and the shooting was coming too late.

"Here's the thing: If Laquan's murder is heinous, unjustified, and illegal today, it was heinous, unjustified, and illegal 400 days ago," King wrote. "It didn't randomly take the mayor and city prosecutors more than a year to determine this."

He continued: "Every single person who saw the video has echoed this for over a year. Emanuel and prosecutors have shape-shifted into pseudo freedom fighters because they’re backed into a corner. They fought tooth-and-nail to have this video concealed, knowing that as long as they did, it would protect Van Dyke from prosecution. Now that it is about to be released, prosecutors have no legal justification for the artificial delay of charges."

By "artificially delaying justice for 400 days," Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and other officials have "allowed anger, mistrust and resentment to build up to a fever pitch," King said.

With that in mind, groups are urging calm ahead of the video's release. On social media, the Black Youth Project 100 is collecting messages of hope and solidarity under the hashtag #BeforeYouWatch.

"This video may cause great pain," one activist says of the shooting footage, "and whether you watch it or not, I want you to remember that our lives are worth more than this system would have you believe."

Meanwhile, in a separate development, the chief of the Chicago Police Department said Monday that he will recommend firing the off-duty officer who shot and killed unarmed African-American woman Rekia Boyd in March 2012.

DISGUSTING.

Now let's see how long it takes the rude right to start blaming this kid for being shot 16 times. Right after that, they will further deflect by trying to bring up Black on Black crime. Some might even try to use the Donald Trump neo-Nazi statistics.

Continues to highlight that there is systemically something wrong in police forces across this country.

That's horrendous footage and the cop needs to be punished to the fullest extent of the law. However the OP is broad brushing police across the nation, and has a penchant to blame whites. If the races were reversed in this scenario there would be no thread on it whatsoever.

The OP broadbrushed police forces across the nation because there is systemic wrong amongst police forces across the nation be the cops black, white , purple or green. But the we're just not hearing too much about black officers killing white unarmed people. Or Hispanic officers shooting unarmed fleeing white people in the back.

So get over yourself. The races aren't reversed. they are what they are and the only argument you got is the equivalent of what FOX News tries to do: blame it on everything except the folks pulling the trigger.

It wouldn't have taken a 12 year old 400 days to look at that video and press charges.

But then again, when prosecutors are in bed with the police, justice misses a beat in the due process two-step.

Oh I believe there was a great injustice done and that officer should have been arrested the day of the incident. But you're incorrect in saying that the races aren't reversed, it is that you concentrate on the ones the media concentrates upon. There are plenty of black on white crimes the media sweeps under the rug, and you, as the media have become thoroughly indoctrinated with political correctness and its agenda. As stated you would not have placed this thread here were the races reversed.

Also, I blamed the cop from the beginning so your accusation that everything is blamed but the one who pulled the trigger is baseless, implying a Fox news objective on my part, are frankly lies. Try being honest instead of reacting emotionally.

By the way, I don't watch Fox, MSNBC, CNN, CBS, ABC or any other news source. You might garner a huge change in your demeanor and walk if you simply turned off the indoctrination station, and got into the Scriptures much more often. :)

They aren't reversed. I concentrate on the ones that are horrendous and show a systemic wrong in the policing system that disproportionately targets and kills black people. So if you're seeing the same thing from white officers against white people, please share. If you're seeing the same thing from black cops against white people, please share. Otherwise you're just talking to be contrary to what is a real problem in police forces across this country.

NOTICE we're talking about killings committed by POLICE OFFICERS and you're deflecting and trying to talk about crimes committed by others. FOCUS on the topic at hand.

Also, I blamed the cop from the beginning so your accusation that everything is blamed but the one who pulled the trigger is baseless, implying a Fox news objective on my part, are frankly lies. Try being honest instead of reacting emotionally.

You're just like the FOX News folks who find one black person to say what they want and suddenly they feel vindicated in their stance even though 98.9% of Blacks say the opposite of what the black person they found says. This rarity you blame the cop doesn't dismiss the regularity ( I'm profiling some of y'all ) with which some of you do blame the dead person.

By the way, I don't watch Fox, MSNBC, CNN, CBS, ABC or any other news source. You might garner a huge change in your demeanor and walk if you simply turned off the indoctrination station, and got into the Scriptures much more often. :)

By the way, you don't have to watch them to repeat the talking points. They get repeated enough and QUOTED that if you're online on a message board or social media or the internet period, you'll get the talking points because you get your news from a source that thinks like you and says what you want to hear.

The young man behaved like an idiot, but I didn't see any reason for him to be shot.

I don't see the cop getting out of this one.

1027 people have been killed by police this year. 509 of them white and 261 of them black.

We had a young man in our town who fled police on foot and was climbing a fence to get away. He posed no threat to the police and was shot in the back, dead.

Carpro, according to some reports, the guy was mentally challenged, not that I know if the officers were aware of that possibility. But this guy is on the ground and his hand is moving/shaking like I've often seen autistic kids move their hands. And then you see another bullet hit him and he stops moving. This was an election year . I'm guessing that's what took 400 days.

The superintendent said

"The officer in this case took a young man's life, and he's going to have to account for his actions," McCarthy said. "People have a right to be angry, people have a right to protest."

But police will not tolerate criminal behavior, he warned.

"We knew this day was coming," McCarthy said. "We've been prepared for this day coming for quite some time."

So they were already prepared for this day for some time and probably wouldn't have released the video if the judge hadn't ordered it. So Chicagoans need to ask themselves why their mayor and police superintendent working with the prosecutors have had this video release delayed

I believe you are right. Election year politics. There is no one more into taking political advantage than Rahm Emanuel.

Chicago is a strange city. It is totally controlled by the Democrats. But it is also nearly bankrupt and headed the way of Detroit. Plenty of Chicagoans are moving to Indianapolis but there are only low-paying jobs here. Most Chicagoans hate Indiana.

Chicago is so dangerous that I am afraid to go there. The Chicago Police force has always had a reputation for brutality. I am surprised that this cop is still alive. I think that Chicago has already offered the family $5,000,000 but they seem to be holding out for more. If convicted, the cop should get the death penalty.

The Democrats should speed up this process in Chicago and settle this case immediately.

Yeah, Rahm made sure this was sealed up until after he was reelected. Chicago political and union corruption go hand in hand.
