Report states that China will offer two small economic concessions to President Donald Trump’s administration in the hope of maintaining friendly relations with the United States.

From the Financial Times:

China will offer the Trump administration better market access for financial sector investments and US beef exports to help avert a trade war, according to Chinese and US officials involved in talks between the two governments.

US President Donald Trump and Xi Jinping, his Chinese counterpart, decided at their first meeting in Florida last week that they needed rushed trade negotiations to produce results within 100 days. The two concessions on finance and beef are relatively easy for Beijing to make.

On April 12, Trump announced he would not label China a currency manipulator -- a promise he had pledged to do on his first day in office. Trump told the Wall Street Journal that he had changed his mind because China is not currently manipulating his currency, though that was already apparent during the election season.

Concessions, I think, is the topic at hand. On the matter of currency manipulation, Trump has just assented to what economists have realized for some time: China is no long artificially holding down the value of its currency (although it had been guilty in the past) and in fact has been buying its currency to prop up it value.

However, real data has not been an especial ingredient in the president's pronouncements. So it appears he climbed off that horse to lubricate negotiations on other matters. Will he abandon the import fee — which Congress wouldn't approve anyway — to sweeten the deal? Stay tuned.
