To be true to my first comment, I must admit that twice I have voted for a Democrat. The reason being that I felt the Republican candidate was in the pocket of big business and big government, based on his court rulings. (He was running for re-election as a county judge)
I must also say that I would not have a problem voting for Zell Miller, or his like, as a Democrat candidate for an office.
Rather than Republican or Democrat, I should probably say that the social conservative is going to get my vote before the social liberal and fiscal liberal or conservative.
Social issues matter more to me than money matters, and that is where the Democratic party has truly left Southerners like myself.
I think most other Southerners would agree with me that we tend to be socially conservative and fiscally moderate.
That is why my g-g grandparents, g grandparents and grandparents were Democrats. The party reflected our beliefs back then.
It no longer does today.
That is the reason my dad switched parties during the Bill Clinton years and that is the reason my grandmother voted in last years election for the first time in 60 years.
The Democrats of today just are not of the same type that the Democrats of mid-20th century and before were.
In reality, it seems like the two parties have switched sides over the last several decades.
With all that in mind, I stand by my comment that 99% of the time the right man for the job is a Republican.
50 years ago, I would not have said that.
