Christians dont watch movies

Had a debate with someone today who saw one bad PG-13 movie and know thinks that all PG-13 movies are bad. Yes no question about it there is lots of filth out there, but to say all movies are bad is not correct. Braveheart for example is very violent but its only reflecting History. Plenty of stories in the Old Testament are also very graphic, but they are there for our learning. No BraveHeart is not spiritual, however its historical and a good film. There are lots of good history films that may have some questionable content but they do not glorify the content. Roots is another one that is very good, but should Christians avoid it because it has some bad scenes?

If I watched a movie and fixated on the content, and worshipped the content then it would be sin. But movies like Braveheart, Saving Private Ryan, Roots, the Patriot, among other history movies are not causing me to sin.

Can't say I disagree with you...but neither do I trust much that comes out of Hollywood. I will never be comfortable with the amount of profanity or the increasing sexuality of even the otherwise good films. Personally...the violence does not usually bother me (most of the time) as long as it is not "gore..just to be gorey".That said....I'm a "special effects" geek. The level of realism and the highly technical nature of what they can portray these days in a manner that makes even the unbelieveable actually seem possible never ceases to amaze me. The movie 2012 was a good example of that. I also am an avid military history buff. I will say though that I do NOT believe that the History Channel, NatGeo, Discovery, Animal Planet or yes....even TBN are reliable sources of natural, world or Bible history.

I love watching movies...but I have had to occasionally turn some off when they "crossed the line". I believe we need to be careful and discriminating in that which we "take in" to our hearts and minds. You can't "erase it" once you have seen it. That is the main problem with pornography as well.

Discernment is the key. The "Lord of the Rings" trilogy are rated pg13 but there is no real sexual content. The language is clean. There is violence but when you are fighting orcs there will be blood and gore. "The Hobbit" has violence but no cussing or sexuality.

Back when I was a kid, our pastor, Rev. Tally preached on watching TV. (One of the few sermons, of his, that I remember, BTW.) Those were the days of "Father Knows Best", "Leave It to Beaver", "Wagon Train", etc. His reply, to the defense that there are some good shows on TV, was the following.

"Why eat a whole bucket of slops to get a butterbean?"

Naturally, as a teenager, I disagreed with him. Guess that's why I remember his words. Used to fight with my brothers because they wanted to see something else when it was time to watch "Zorro". When dating, going to the movies, was the thing to do. Especially in the time of beach movies and Elvis Presley.

TV and movies, in general, have changed, and not for the good. Dezi and Lucy slept in twin beds. Jeannie couldn't show her belly button. Bullets made small holes and barely bled. "Dang it" was probably as close to cussing as anyone ever went for non adult only productions.

As time moved on, Pastor Tally's words came to mind more and more often. Star Wars was probably the last movie that we watched in a theater. In the last few years, a couple of movies, shown at church, are the only ones I've watched. This sinner has almost quit watching TV, as well. Rarely ever turn it on except to watch local news and weather.

Agree! "Ancient Aliens" is a good example. Believe the Bible or accept the doubts instilled by the producers of that series. The media is a powerful tool in the hands on Satan.

I'd much rather read Lord of the Rings than the bible. I'm not hating on the bible christians, I just don't find it very interesting.

If you make a blanket statement like "all movies rated PG-13 are bad" then that means you are relying on hollywood's judgment to make your decisions for you. You're letting someone who is probably not a Christian decide what is acceptable for you and what is not.

I've seen some R movies such as the Patriot that imo are good and acceptabe for me to watch. I don't have a problem with historically relevant war carnage.'

Christians need discernment no doubt. There are lots of trash on TV that I do not watch and is unholy such as "The Big Bang" and other garbage. TV has gone down the tube since I was a boy. We watched Duck Tales, Silver Spoons, and Saved by the Belle. Although not perfect, certainly far better than the trash on TV today.

There was a few in Braveheart but not enough to be a problem. The problem is when the film glorifies sexual content and language then it becomes a problem. Braveheart did not do that, as its a historical film which is accurate to a degree. Having watched the history channel on the story there are inaccuracies, but for the most part they got it correct.

My point is Romans 14. I have a conscience but the problem lies when someone tries to militate their conscience on me and tell me that they do not like me watching movies.

I agree. However I do not agree what you said of the channels above. I watched a certain show and actually went out and did the research myself and discovered that the show was correct. I downloaded the episode on iTunes after I saw it and did check out some of the content as mentioned. Yes the channels above have their inaccuracies but I would not say that they are not reliable sources of material. But then again TBN I would stay far away from. Bible history I think you kinda have a point with the exception of the Bible series that came out recently that got endorsed by some good Christian leaders.

Crossing the line is different for different people. With some one bad word has crossed the line. With some one act of violence has crossed the line. But with me its when the film glorifies sex, language, etc.. Braveheart does not glorify sex, and foul language and besides the film was not that extreme in these areas. Its was quite violent but so was history.

If I were to worship movies and be obsessed with them then we would have a problem however.

Also I noticed that on the Way of the Master Radio Todd Friel plays clips of all kinds of movies. He argues for DISCERNMENT in what you watch but not just to separate from all movies because you are afraid of what they show. John 17:15-19 argues about being in the world, just not of the world.

Too many times "love not the world" is interpreted as "have nothing to do with the world" and lived as "keep your self isolated from the world".

Truth is, the "world" is not what is on the outside as much as it is what is already inside of us.

Some Christians I know of who "don't smoke, don't chew, and don't run around with folks that do" are as worldly as they come.

I watched Braveheart last night for the umpteenth time. Not that I believed the accounts there. much, as has been said, is hollywood. but the man did exist, and where there is smoke, there is fire, so it can be safely said there once lived a man in Scotland too much for an English monarch to handle.

The point is that Hollywood....(or Hellywood:tongue3: if you please) is more about money and "entertainment" than they'll ever be about such annoying little things such as "facts" or true "history". They lost any real credibility that they may have once had years ago. Every now and then the industry may slip up and get things right...if not in truth...at least maybe in "spirit" but they can never be regarded as trustworthy "guardians" of real truth. That's like believing the old statement..."I'm from the government....and I'm here to help!".........NOT!!!!

For the record....I liked Braveheart too. The essence of the STORY was quite inspiring. I think the Lord is looking for men and women today who would be as dedicated to His Way, Truth, and Life. As for the "facts of history"....I wouldn't take everything about the movie as even nearly factual.....and Rose and Jack were NOT on the Titanic....even though James Cameron did a pretty fair job of portraying the "event". Great special effects!!! I love great special effects!!:thumbsup:

Just to clarify so everybody knows, John Wayne and "The Flying Tigers" did huge damage to people's understanding of World War II. The movie had them flying and fighting in grueling, daily combat for a long time before December 7, 1941, whereas in reality, the Flying Tigers got their first taste of combat 2 weeks after Pearl Harbor.

Many people are under the impression that the American Volunteer Group in China fought bloody sky battles against the Japanese before the Pearl Harbor Attack, but it just ain't so.

In the Fighting Seabees, John Wayne and his buddies did not drum up the entire concept and training of the Construction Battalions (CB's, Sea-Bees) in the months leading up to Guadalcanal or any other island in 1942. The time frame given in the movie would have given them about 3-5 months to think up the concept of Sea-Bees, get authorization from the Pentagon and/or Congress, get the men trained, and deploy them to combat. Sorry, folks, that ain't gonna happen!

As much as I like old John Wayne movies (and I don't blame him for the libertys taken by the script writers) that is just more proof of the way that Hollywood takes excess liberties with those pesky little things known as "facts" and "truth" in order to tell any given story in a way that "flows" on the silver screen. Anything generally goes to make a buck. Even the recent Bible Series on the History Channel displayed the same tendency to depart from the Biblical narrative on occasion in many of the details of scripture in order to make it "play" better. If you watched it like I did with a critical eye evaluating it story by story and scene by scene from a strictly Biblical viewpoint you could almost make a case that they added to or took away from the "text" of scripture in violation of the spirit of Rev.22:18-19. I won't be dogmatic about that but neither was I very comfortable about the matter either. My own Pastor recommended that series to our entire church. Oh well.....what's a dedicated biblicist to do these days? Sighhh! I'll take reality over fiction any day...either about secular stuff OR Biblical stuff. I do like a good "story" with a solid plot and good special effects though.

Huh??? I am not following as I have never seen the film. However I agree that Hollywood is in error in some areas. They do exaggerate often..

Yep...sure do but I live in Pickens....don't get downtown in G'ville much. I didn't even know they had a Marble Slab down there! I love those places!:thumbsup: I'll bet the City of Greenville just lovvvved you! I know they are so very insanely conscious of their "image" in downtown Greenville.
