The problem is with our definition of leadership here. It seems like your definition of leadership is giving orders.

Well they are, but the leader is to do it in such a way that the people think it is their choice instead of being forced into it.

A leader should inspire others to follow based on the force of his character and conviction, not simply his position.

isn't it the 'norm" in baptist churches though to have pastoral staff/Elders handle the teaching/leadership aspects of church, while deacons delegated to handle more of the "business" of the church?

Grace Baptist Church, home to Tom Ascol, head of the Calvinist "Founders" faction of Southern Baptists, and Reformed blogger extraordinaire Timmy Brister, says this on their website:

Apparently they're not seeing Free's rigid spiritual/physical dichotomy in Scripture either.

Good to know that I'm not alone in this. Thanks for this. :)

I think that is fair but I would add, because it is what the bible teaches.

Really I am not sure what the norm is as I have seen all kinds of set ups. Perhaps they vary in different areas but in this area they mostly use the deacons as those who are over the church. The pastor may get the title as being over the church but the deacons are the ones who rule in all reality. Sort of like many marriages. She lets him have the title of head but in truth she rules.

As for deacons taking care of business that would be fine if they were under the leadership of the elders and not doing their own thing or even following what the people want. Sheep don't vote or lead. Sheep follow. The elders are the shepherds, not the deacons. Perhaps I should say the elders should be the shepherds and not the deacons.

The way I look at the modern church is that the people own the building, including the deacons, and they pay the bills, including my "wages". They should control the building. I looked after the spiritual end....but they still had the right to "fire" me if I stepped out of line.

Seemed fair to me. I was exofficio chair of all committees.

    Cheers,

    Jim

The job of the deacon is the job we've given to trustees. Do you think the seven men ordained were actually serving the tables themselves, or were they ordained to manage the service of tables?

Deacons are simply managers of the church business.

It says they were called to serve tables. Sadly the pride of men who seek to be seen because of a position called deacon mostly would not even consider such a calling if it was to serve tables.

It says they were appointed over this business. As the NASB states it, they were put in charge of this task.

    1) A daily ministration was taking place.
    2) They came to the Apostles to settle a dispute.
    3) Their resolution was to appoint seven men to oversee the daily ministration.

The problem is that at no time was deacons to be a board that kept rule on the Elders or even the church. It matters not that you might call them trustees. That is nothing but a way to get around having women deacons. Do you have or could you have women trustees?
