The best thing to do is to purchase hosting and build your own using a wordpress platform. Wordpress has become much more expandable and there are many templates appropriate for churches to use with wordpress.

Agreed.

Alternatively, and cheaper (because it's free), you might consider setting up a Facebook page for the church. If nothing else, it's a temporary "stop-gap" until you create an actual website. Also, Facebook connects you in with the social media angle for church-wide notifications and messages.

I would highly recommend using a platform that has desktop and mobile, from the very beginning. Also, look at lots of websites to glean ideas and what not to do. Make it easy to use and easy to change.

You can do that with a Word Press template that is "responsive", meaning it will scale to fit whatever mobile device someone is using.
