I know JFK smoked cigarettes.

I'd vote for a cigarette-smoker, but not that one. The bio and voting record and the illegal drug use killed him for me.

FDR also smoked cigarettes.

Nowadays, it would probably look a little silly to see a politician smoking a cigarette...I don't know why.

It probably wouldn't affect my vote.

I do think it may hurt Obama in the primaries.

There are many anti-smoking liberals out there who may flock to another Dem candidate in lieu of him.

If the primary and/or general elections are very close, it may play some role.

Everything one does, whether good or bad, always has some kind of effect in so large a contest.

I can understand why you might think so, but you're talking about liberals. Smoking marijuana would be OK, but not cigarettes.

I wouldn't worry though. They don't usually let a little thing like principles get in their way very often.

Whether or not someone smokes falls far below ones stand on abortion, foreign policy, taxes, etc.... If it came down to 2 candidates and they both were identical except for the fact that one smoked and the other did not, I would go for the one that did not. Otherwise, there are generally more important factors to consider.

Has there ever been a president who smoked cigarrettes???

I would think the vast majority of Presidents smoked. I mean, considering how prevalent and overwhelmingly acceptable and fashionable smoking was up until about the late 60's, I would think that probably almost all of them smoked.

The mistake here is that the post assumes liberals care about personal integrity. We already have seen with the adoration of Clinton by the liberal left that character means nothing. Smoking will not affect Obama in anyway in my opinion.

Would the fact that a person is a cigarette smoker cause you not to vote for him/her as president of the United States? (cigars and pipes dont count)
<snip>

depends on what brand of cigarettes he smokes, maybe.

Sounds like a bit of desperation going on here. "Would you vote for a man who doesn't shovel his driveway until he needs to go somewhere?" "Would you vote for a man who puts the toilet paper backwards on the dispenser?"

Um...

Who hasn't seen the photos of FDR with his long cigarette holder?
