"Among us Dissenters the preacher claims no priestly power, and therefore should never wear a peculiar dress; let fools wear fools' caps and fools' dresses, but men who make no claim to be fools should not put on fools' clothes. None but a very silly sheep would wear wolf's clothing. It is a singular taste which makes honest men covet the rags ot thieves. . . . They must be weak folks indeed who want a man to dress like a woman before they can enjoy his sermon; and he who cannot preach without such milliner's trumpery may be a man among geese, but he is a goose among men." ---Charles Spurgeon

I didn't realize Charles Spurgeon was a part of this conversation. Not only that, it seems like he is the authority. All of us at BB should now stop talking about this subject. The almighty Spurgeon has spoken and we should not have a differing opinion from him!

"When I have found intense pain relieved, a weary brain soothed, and calm, refreshing sleep obtained by a cigar, I have felt grateful to God, and have blessed His name..." ~ Charles H. Spurgeon

I'm thinking Spurgeon was afraid ruffled or clergy collars would keep him from enjoying a good smoke.

If a man will adopt a curious dress I will not defend him; why cannot he dress like a gentleman, not like a woman?

A cigar would be unbecoming a lady. Only real men in street clothes should accessorize with a Havana....

It amazes me how some folk need to be mad about something...

Hey...if you don't like clergy collars, don't wear one.

At one time in England, the wider the collar, the more evangelical you were. It was a sign.

Bang on, Mr. Bell! A collar is not for everyone, and certainly nothing to get excited about. I even own a couple of long ties for emergencies.

Cheers, and bless,

Jim

So...in the mid and late 1970's we sure did have some evangelical folk...

Too funny. Remember those days... from Mark Wills' song

"It was 1970-something
In the world that I grew up in
Farrah Faucett hair-do days
Bell bottoms and eight-track tapes
Lookin' back now I can see me
And oh, man did I look cheesy
But I wouldn't trade those days for nothin'
It was 1970-something"
