Very funny
I remember it well. 0500 the D.I. on duty would grab one of these and walk up and down the center of the squad bay beating it with a riot baton like a bell and/or throw it. Either way, by the time reveille began playing over the speakers, our feet were already on the deck! Ah, what a time we had!

I remember very well in Army BT, the DI would come in at 0500 yelling and by the time he reached the end of the barracks, he would start back flipping the bunks of those who were still in them.
If it was raining outside he would send us out in the rain, in our underwear at parade rest while he went to the mess hall. This was if he had to flip a bunk. If it wasn't raining we had to carry our bunks outside, line them perfectly, make them up, and stand at parade rest while he went to the mess hall.
Oh, the memories.
One morning in BT we fell out for formation, and the DI got in everyone's face every morning, not only to see if you shaved, but that it was a close shave.
One guy had some stubble on his chin, the DI sent him over to a nearby pine tree and said, when I come back that stubble better gone.
So the guy just stood there and the DI came back and made him do 25 pushups, and said, I want that stubble gone.
The guy addressing the DI formally and correctly, asked how can I do that here?
The DI said, put your chin on that pine tree and rub it off. So he rubbed it a minute or so, and he came back and made him do 25 more pushups, saying, I'm not telling you again to get rid of that stubble.
So he kept rubbing until a small stream of blood began running, then the DI told him to fall back in formation.
From that point on you have never seen so many young men so well shaven.
