The coach was stupid.
He never should have let the team score 100 points (you can slow down the game and put in your scrubs).
But after that, he most definitely should not have contradicted the position of his employer. That's just idiotic. Did he have to feel contrition? No, but making a public statement that contradicted his boss was unwise.
Besides, it's not like this coach has a multi-year contract with a huge buyout clause.

I'll repost here what I posted on the other thread last night.
They fired the coach on the same day he e-mailed a newspaper saying he would not apologize.
I applaud the decision. As I said before, Coaching at the high school level is not just about winning, it is about instilling sportsmanship and values into student-athletes.

The reply I used to think (but I'm not sure if I actually spoke it) when something was said along the lines of "be a good sport," or especially "it's not all about winning and losing," was "Should Jesus be a good sport with the devil?" Anyway, you gotta admit God does 'run up the score' with eternal torment. And John Heisman was not fired for his Georgia Tech teams's 222-0 win over Cumberland College.
Nevertheless, I agree that the coach in question should have worked the clock.

As for the coach of the winning team, he deserved to be fired. Remember something, these are two Christian schools playing and what type of testimony does that give to the others. Is Christ honored through this? My answer is NO. The coach should have been fired not only because of the result of the game, but for not being sorry for their actions. What is he teaching his players?

By leaving his starters in, shooting threes and using a full-court press, he is not teaching his players good sportsmanship. We have an Upward Basketball league here and when the game is out of hand, the coaches will make sure that it doesn't get any worse by giving the players who don't score that much and chance to score. That didn't happen there because the starters were in I believe until half way through the fourth quarter.

I live in the area in which this took place, so of the things that were reported are either stretched out of whack or completely wrong.
I think the coach should still be employed, he obviously knows how to win. The team they were playing is a losing team who's atheletic department year in and year out puts them against some of the toughest private schools in the metroplex. The losing team also gave no effort in stopping the offensive assault they allowed the opposing team to score at will. The opposing (winning team) put in their 2nd stringers, who very seldom have an opportunity to play ball, this gave them a chance to see court time, do you think they are gonna pass up on blowing out another team.
When winning coaches get fired for winning, it is a sad day. You play sports to win, if that wasn't your goal then you are wasting your time. You enhance skills and develop as players and sportsmen before, during, and after the game, that comes with playing the game, winning and losing.
The attitudes and opinions on this thread are the exact reason why no one wins in games any more, trophies go to everyone, and we don't keep score. If I am rewarded for my 100% effort the same as the guy that gives 10%, perhaps I should tone it down a bit. If my son is playing in a league where scores aren't kept (which he is right now) I let him know, because he wants to know who won.

Are you telling us that the winning team didn't employ a full court press in the 4th quarter?
Did they appear to give no effort because they were athletically overmatched, or is it because you think they gave no effort?

How could a full court press be effectively run if the other team gave up in the second half? They were standing around allowing the other team to score and with each basket they made they cheered them on for more.
I know this is hard for some to understand but at times the media likes to find a "victim" and prop them up as "mentally disabled" ball players that were over matched and over whelmed by the skills of the big bad private school. Which isn't the case at all.

The losing team actually cheered the winning team on? I find this hard to believe.
I said nothing about mentally disabled. What I did ask was whether they were athletically overmatched. Can you answer the question I actually asked?

They were obviously over matched, they lost by 100 points, it doesn't take a sports guru to put that one together. They were also out coached. The team that wins over matches the team that loses, for that day, or for the duration of their series, one team will over match the other. I hope this satisfied the requirements of question.
Believe what you would like, I live in Dallas and I follow local sports. This was discussed in great detail for a couple of weeks. The losing team cheered their opponents on as they scored and continued to score.
If this would have been a 75 - 0 win (which the winning team has done before) nothing would have been said of it. So I guess the magic number is 100, then people care. What if the score was 99-2, would we be having this discussion.

You've also said that the losing team quit. I'm trying to figure out what actually happened, because what you're saying contradicts what was reported and this is the first time I've heard anybody say that the losing team quit playing.

They quit, they gave up, laid down, stopped playing. They allowed the other team to score at will, this fact was reported the day after it occurred and apparently got lost as the story became big news for some reason.
My point exactly, this win is unlike other big blowouts, they happen all the time.
