Comcast must be the first entity to be happy to have Time Warner Cable. Time Warner is stoked because Comcast threw in 3 free months of HBO.

Merger is scheduled for next Thursday sometime between 8 am and 4 pm.

The reason this deal is scary is that for the vast majority of businesses in 19 of the 20 largest metropolitan areas in the country, their only choice for a high-capacity wired connection will be Comcast. Comcast, in turn, has its own built-in conflicts of interest: It will be serving the interests of its shareholders by keeping investments in its network as low as possible -- in particular, making no move to provide the world-class fiber-optic connections that are now standard and cheap in other countries -- and extracting as much rent as it can, in all kinds of ways. Comcast, for purposes of today's public , is calling itself a "cable company." It no longer is. Comcast sells infrastructure subject to neither competition nor a cop on the beat.

Does ANYBODY have a choice of more than one high-capacity wired connection anywhere in the country? I know that Google fiber is making small inroads in some communities but otherwise I don't know of anyone else that has a choice.

Here in the Twin Cities the communities negotiate de facto monopolies by only allowing one service provider to use the wired infrastructure to provide service.

Also in the news today, Comcast wants to charge Netflix a fee for being the largest user of Comcast's bandwidth. This could mean price hikes by Netflix down the road and put Comcast in a position to charge both the consumer and a content provider to get media via Comcast servers. This could be good or bad news. Bad news if the practice of charging content providers becomes commonplace. Imagine how much Comcast would charge Netflix, YouTube, Hulu, Vudu, etc. and how it would increase your monthly cable bill. It could potentially be good news if it led to ala carte pricing whereby consumers could subscribe to only those channels they actually wanted instead of paying for channels they receive but never watch.

There goes my service, my bill, my selections ...

Time to get Google Fiber. >>sigh<<

I hear Comcast will be able to tell if I'm in my recliner based on data they get from that sensor on top of my TV that goes with the Wii. Comcast will sell the data to Google who will, in turn, customize the commercials I see on the television.

I have had a non-stop stream of Cheese Doodle ads for a week.

Yesterday Fox televised the Daytona 500. Conspiring with Comcast they played last year's 500 and Jimmie Johnson won. They had a crawler on-screen with something about rain delays and all that garbage. Who is going to believe what Fox has to say? I thought it was an Saudi oil prince messing with my television and trying to manipulate my mood. Well they succeeded. I can't stand Jimmie Johnson.

I get ready for bed last night and take one more lap around the cable box and what do I find? The Daytona 500 with Junior leading and goes on to win.

Orwellian.

Padre ...

uh ... you're really trying to blame Fox, an unnamed Saudi prince, Comcast, Jimmie Johnson and George Orwell for you missing the "rain delay" notification at the bottom of the screen?

REALLY???

Am I going to have to steal one of Poncho's tin foil hats for you to wear?

Well, at least I know you weren't one of those who tweeted Johnson to congratulate him for winning the 500 yesterday.

You bet your little red wagon I am. Control the information and you control the country. How was I to know if that crawler was telling the truth? I remember back in 1969 when the first moonlanding hoax was perpetuated by the government's control over the media. You ain't gonna catch me asleep at the wheel this time.

REALLY???

From a man who raspberried Junior on the other thread. You could use some - in the words of Larry MacReynold's HEP.

Am I going to have to steal one of Poncho's tin foil hats for you to wear?

Tinfoil hats? Apparently you are not aware of Alcoa's stranglehold on the tinfoil industry. Don't even get me started!

Tweeting was designed by the devil to get folk thinking they are more important than the really are. #jimmiedontcallme

It will be interesting to see what Obama and Holder decide about this merger.

Two good networks that are not shown on most cable systems are NRB and RFD-TV. NRB is a religious network of the National Religious Broadcasters and has some unique programs. RFD is a farm network that caters to the interests of rural people.

Agreed, but it is probably off topic.

Pardon me if I interrupted your little love fest with TND. From the conversation you guys were having it sounded as if the topic had already changed from Comcast to me. Sounded like it was getting sloppy too. Eeew!

I'll look the other way so you two "buddies" can continue on. :1_grouphug:

That's just creepy. Even for you, Poncho.
