Please give your feedback on which of the following commentaries you like / dislike and why.

John Gill
Albert Barnes
Jamieson, Fausset & Brown
Keil & Delitzsch
Matthey Henry

I have only read a bit of some of those. I don't like Henry because as a general rule you get better commentary from guys who don't try to cover the whole Bible. Also, I understand there are some theological problems with some of Henry's work. Finally, in reading his work compared with others, I just haven't found much that is fruitful there.

I do like Keil and Delitzsch, the little I have used them.

Up front I use them all and love them all, however you must take the good and leave the bad in all. I like using them because they are all in the public domain and you can quote them without worrying about copyright law

John Gill - supposed to be strong reform though have not run into it in the three years I've been digging in his.

Albert Barnes - have used him for 30 years I'd guess and find him very useful. He deals with some of the things other people skim over, though he does his own skimming

Jamieson, Fausset & Brown - supposed to be a tad liberal, but have found it good thus far.

Keil & Delitzsch - Great from what I have seen but haven't had it since school days until esword put it out.

Matthey Henry - Not the best for finding information, but great idea resource on a devotional level. Skimpy usually.

I think all these are on esword just in case I can't push that program too much along with others.

My favorite biblical commentaries are the deuterocanonicals/apocrypha. I'm often amiss when I hear of people spending good money on commentaries, when the best ones are free.

I use and like them all for different reasons.I like the Bible Knowledge Commentary edited by Walvoord &Zuck, I also like the Expositors Commentary edited by Gabelien.
E-Sword is great for the older stuff commentary wise, try Biblecetre.net for some of the newer commentaries and added material.

I use or have used all of them. I am not a huge fan of Matthew Henry, he seems a bit shallow.

I use Calvin's commentaries a lot as well, and the Expositors Greek NT.

JF&B - It's amazing how it seems just about every verse in the bible (according to them) points to the evils of the papacy.

I have Matthew Henry and John Gill. Gill is valuable because he deals with every Bible verse which Henry doesn't. But I find Gill longwinded sometimes, while Henry makes better applications. I suppose we always have to remember that the best commentaters were but men and are not infallible.

All of them are outdated. There has been a lot of discoveries and scholarly work done since about 1970.

Old is not always better. Sometimes old is not that far from buried. Though I do recognize some great value in most of the commentaries mentioned in the first post.

Deutero-cannonical? I find it hard to believe that was serious, but it did not sound like kidding around either.

ALL COMMENTARIES ARE LIKE WATERMELONS. You have to know when to spit out the seeds. Some are sweeter and some have fewer seeds. It has always been thus...

Thanks. Go back again, just added our "Position Summaries". My first serious update to the site. The guy who used to do it is not doing it now. Sermons and Bible Studies still about 5 mos out of date, hope to update next week.

I like Barnes, good insight and usually not outstanding in a field on topics.

Henry does not touch too many difficult passages. I would recomend him for a young Christian just getting started so that he could learn how to use a commentary and only if nothing else were available.

RJ I would add those links.Then you could tell the folks in your church if they want to do any real good Bible research to go to the church site and go to the links.What a tool you have given them.
