Just had a NASTY experience, still twitchy, an earthquake just offshore, a bit of doozy at 7.0. The house rattled and creaked, the cat freaked, I thought dear Lord....it is wet and cold and black outside.

It went on for what seemed forever and the fear of ongoing rolls has not settled my pounding heart or my nerves.

Oh goodness Melanie!!! That must have been scary!! We've had just little baby earthquakes (like a 3 or so) and it's huge news when it happens because we just don't get a lot here on the east coast of the US.

Our big news here is the heat. NY hasn't been terrible but in some parts of the country, it's well into triple digits and we've had some really bad storms as well. NOT a good thing.

The same goes for middle TN and SW KY (which is in SEVERE drought conditions --- 10-15 inches + behind average so far this year).

Many local communities/counties have outlawed the private use of July 4th fireworks.

Franklin, TN (county seat of Williamson County [just S of Nashville]), is now citing drivers who flip their cigarette butts out the window (a good reason to stop smoking anyway!) due to the fire hazard that they cause.

America seems to have extremes in weather.....either snowplough or hotter than Hades..... glad they are stomping on idjits who flick butts out onto the tinder dry road verge.

Its the kiddies school holidays at the moment and the fire brigade is pretty annoyed at the junior arsonists who haven't anything better to do than put peoples lives at risk. If I was in charge, a sound thrashing and hard yakka would sort the little swine!!!! I am cross is all.

Severe drought......do you have water restrictions on how long you may shower for, or how many minutes you can use the garden irrigators. I left Brisbane during a drought, my mother a keen gardener hand watered her 300 plus plants with grey water to try to keep her pride and joy alive. Mind you, here in the land of soddeness a drought is declared if it has not rained all week!!! (tongue in cheek)

Lastly, Happy Independence Day!!!

Ohhhhhh it is so cute Gina....ta!

One of the primary school teachers and I were talking. Apparently he is finding it very difficult sourcing good books for boys 8-11. I only know of OLD boys own adventure books. He lent me a book by a guy Wilson Rawes called "The Red Fern" as suitable. A good straight forward book to engage young fellas and no bad morality or such like. Know any books that might fit the bill?

While you folks have obviously melted down.....I have been enjoying Wilson Rawes books. I googled up a biography of him and was unsurprised that he has died.

Even so....it made me think. I surely was not born until a good 40 odd years after him, but what an amazing transformation of the world has happened in a hundred years.

Hrm. Modern books for that age group, for boys.

The Chronicles of Narnia is a series, but timeless.

Modern...depends on the likes of kids. "Tough to Tackle" is a good lesson on not being a quitter even when you're embarrassed or angry. "Heart of a Samurai" is also said to be good. "Dave the Potter" is about an American slave and would make a good read.

I totally love the "Lemony Snicket" series. LOL It's the opposite of normal and has nothing do with Christianity or any other religion. It's gloomy but hilarious. Lots of people die, but it's not like it sounds. You'd just have to read them and maybe have a twisted sense of humor like I do. They're totally ridiculous in a way that had me hooked from the start.

Speaking of gloomy and parents and others being deceased, one thing we've been trying to do is find series books that feature HAPPY parents. The majority have the mom dead or she's the evil stepmother, and since Carl's kids lost their mom and I'm the stepmother, we're trying NOT to put ideas in their head, especially since they were told by someone else that I'd never be their mom, they shouldn't listen to me, etc.. Someone told me the name of ONE series, but I can't remember it for anything! However, the idea sounds appealing. It's a shame that in most series books, one of the parents is always the bad guy or dead. I'd try to stay away from those types of series or books when finding good reading for kids as you never know what it might trigger. We want them to think, but we don't want to trigger a lot of painful memories or put ideas in the heads of kids who may already be suffering with some type of depression or anger issues.

I haven't read it or heard about anyone else who has, but am interested in "A Faithful Boy's Influence."

One thing is that it isn't easy to find a lot of books for that age group, not for boys anyway. However, I've found that upping their initial interest in reading with short stories with a small reward for reading them, followed by having them SEE a better reward for older books...doing that makes them really want to read the older books and most people are amazed that yes, Johnny can actually read that book that says it's for a teenager or young adult! Sometimes they may not grasp the whole concept, but it's in their minds and they got what they could at the time, then later in life they may remember it and go "oooohhh, I see different dimensions on what that book meant!"

Don't you think it would be neat for a classroom to write their own book? One kids writes the first chapter, then the next one reads it and writes the next chapter, and on it goes until every kid writes a chapter. How cool would that be, to have a tween book written by a classroom of tweens? I bet the first people to do it would sure get a lot of attention to boot! Then it could also be for boys AND girls instead of the nonsense they have with marketing a book for either a boy or a girl.

We are on day 5 of VBS and I'm EXHAUSTED!! I'm planning on not leaving my bed tomorrow until I have to feed the horse dinner around 5 pm. LOL I went from camp (sleep-away Christian girls' camp - working with their horsemanship program) straight into feeding almost 800 people at VBS and I have no energy left. Today I need to work after VBS is over (set up stuff for Sunday on the computer) then go to the barn to do the barn chores and bring Whirl in for the night. Dinner tonight will be at the VBS fair (hot dogs, funnel cakes) so I don't even need to cook. :D

Ann, not sure what VBS stands for, but I endorse a day in bed for everyone as a day of contemplation and energy renewal....:wavey:

It stands for Vacation Bible School. We have it for 5 days, Monday through Friday, 9:30 am to noon. There is Bible teaching, crafts, gym and stuff. It's a great outreach to the community but MAN, is it hard work!

If its such hard work, then why do you do it? What is the goal?

Surely it is as St ignatius of Loyola so aptly put it

Ad majorem Dei gloriam

To the greater glory of God

It is a wonderful self sacrifice, exhausting but very rewarding.:godisgood:

It is a great introduction to the Gospel for many in our community. We've also found MANY adults coming back and being saved "Because I remember coming here to VBS as a child and knew when I was searching for a church, this is where I was going to go and once I was here, I heard the Gospel and was saved." Yep - there is much fruit in our hard work and there is no question - God gets the glory!!!

Here's our forecast, which usually ends up a few degrees above what they say. No chance of rain in sight. I'm nearing the point of a mental breakdown...seriously can't handle high temps coupled with stress.

OH MY GOSH!!! I'd DIE in those temps!! No way could I live where we saw 112! *faint*

I hate to tell you our temps for the next 5 days but let's just say that I'm a good 30 degrees below that and I'm dreading Thursday and Friday when we are doing a lot of packing for our trip and it will be almost 90!! But then again, we have the humidity which makes it feel worse but no where near 112 degrees!! I'd live in a freezer instead. LOL

Keep cool!! Those are the temps where you just give up on life and hunker down, eat lots of watermelon and not leave the house.

Gina....do you live at Hell's front porch? It sounds so awful....I trust it is a dry heat but still, I am quite warm enough with the heater behind me and me in my jimmy-jams, ugh boots and mittens!:wavey:

Usually it's not a dry heat, but we haven't had rain in so long that now the humidity is only 16%, which does help. They're not very bright out here...last week when we had a chance of rain (which didn't occur) the weatherman said it would be great because it would drive the temperature down a few degrees. A friend and I busted up laughing... methinks there's more than a few degrees of nepotism going on at the station!

Here's what it is at the moment, bottom left!
