Hello. My name is Donna and I thank-you for this forum I just found. I need some advice. I have been walking with the Lord for a long time and never much cared for religion or denominations. I have attended Calvary Chapels, Baptist, Independent Fundamental Baptist, and non-denominational churches. I just moved across the country from California to South Carolina and I am trying to decide what church to attend. My neighbors are part of Southern Baptists and they have invited me to church (they are wonderful people). To be honest I don't like the direction Southern Baptists seem to be headed. I feel like (as a group), they seem to be drifting towards embracing homosexuality and women preaching, etc. I LOVE Independent Baptist churches preaching, teaching and for the Holy spirit seems to draw me towards that type of ministry, HOWEVER, there are issues with them I dont agree with such as: KJ only, Once saved always saved, or needing to be a complete abstainer from alcohol. I see nothing wrong with having a glass of wine now and again. Is this just the nature of "religion" and I will never find an agreeable church?? I want to walk firm with whatever church I decide to attend without hiding anything or being fake. I am of the opinion that the Holy spirit will guide me in such things. Has anyone else struggled with this? I welcome any and all opinions and thanks again for accepting me into this group!

Confused about church. Salvation solid-NEED advice

I have a somewhat similar situation to yours. I attended a KJVO, alcohol abstaining church in my youth. As an adult I moved around churches a bit and wound up at an IFB church like you're describing in 2010. By this time in my life I realized KJVO was wrong, total abstaining was wrong, dress codes were wrong etc. so I moved on. (There were other reasons as well.)
You'll probably never find the perfect church but don't let that stop you from attending and serving. My advice would be to attend several churches and see how they line up with the Bible. Be aggressive in getting the answers you are seeking. Don't waste time waiting for them to reveal their beliefs (this was my error at the IFB church), rather go to the pastor with a list of questions.
I wouldn't dismiss SBC churches without first finding out more about the individual congregations.
Pray that God opens your heart and mind and leads you to a good church. God bless you on your search.

While you may find some random churches in the SBC moving in that direction, this is not the direction of the SBC as a group. (I say this as someone who is independent, not part of the SBC.)
Too often we set up our "standards" for what a church must have or be, and leave little room for the leadership of the Holy Spirit. I recommend above all that you seek a church that is wholly committed to the Scriptures -- the 66 books of the Holy Bible -- as the only rule of their faith and practice; the criterion to which they seek in all matters of truth (coupled with the leadership of the Holy Spirit, of course).
