Conservative Texans Love To Fight The Feds Until They Need Them

For Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R), suing the federal government is a point of pride. During Barack Obama’s presidency, Texas sued the administration at least 48 times.

Abbott is so skeptical of federal activities that he deployed the Texas State Guard in 2015 to monitor a U.S. military training exercise in the state. The move was seen as fanning conspiracy theories about the Obama administration, including one that claimed the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) was creating political prisoner camps in Walmarts.

But since catastrophic Hurricane Harvey hit, Abbott has eagerly accepted the feds’ support. (Abbott’s office did not respond to a request for comment.)“We could not be more appreciative of what the federal government has done,” he said on Sunday, noting that FEMA had been “very actively involved and engaged ... long before the hurricane even hit the ground.”

More than 12,400 employees from over a dozen federal departments and agencies are working to respond to the storm damage in Texas and Louisiana, according to a FEMA statement on Wednesday, and more than 63,000 individuals and households have been approved for FEMA assistance.

Conservative Texans don’t see a contradiction.
Because there is none. (Well, only in the fevered imaginations of demented leftists.)

Abbott is so skeptical of federal activities that he deployed the Texas State Guard in 2015 to monitor a U.S. military training exercise in the state.
LOL! Still trotting out that old false charge? The TSG was PART OF the training exercise. They acted as monitors and scorers and as liaison between the state and federal military units. LOL! Do you ever get anything right? ROFLOL!

“We could not be more appreciative of what the federal government has done,” he said on Sunday,
Yes. President Trump visited some of the worst areas and was a great encouragement to Texans in need. It is nice to know we finally have a President who cares for the people. What was really nice, and the President acknowledged this, is that we really didn't need all that much federal help. Texans helping Texans. We got this covered.

CTB - do you understand the difference between reporting the news, and creating it?

Your linked article is an excellent example of the second, not the first.

Is this Texans taking care of Texans?

Is this Texans taking care of Texans? Or is the rest of us helping Texans?

President Donald Trump has sent lawmakers an initial request for a $7.9 billion down payment toward Harvey relief and recovery efforts.

Personally I don't mind "the rest of us helping Texans". Sorry you are bothered by that.

Hank, it doesn't bother me. In fact, this is a very important function of government. But, it does seem rather hypocritical that a number of GOP Texans did not want any federal money going to Hurricane Sandy victims ... but now are singing a different tune and seeing no contradiction in their desire. I'd say it is showing the selfishness of some Republican politicians and supporters.

By the way Fox news is saying that now Trump is asking or going to ask for over 14 billion.

The reason Texas Sen. Ted Cruz was against the Sandy bill was all the pork that was added to it. If it had been a "stand alone" bill he would have supported it.

That the government does Unconstitutional things and that there is a legal mechanism by which states can seek redress and relief from these things does not negate those things which fall under the legitimate role of the government and which Texas, being a tax paying entity, is entitled to.

In April of 2011, a significant portion of my hometown in Alabama was destroyed by tornadoes. A significant portion of my state was destroyed or impacted, and over 300 people killed.

Texans were among the first to help us.

So, I'm more than happy to help them.

No such thing as "Hurricane Sandy".

The reason Texas Sen. Ted Cruz was against the Sandy bill was all the pork that was added to it. If it had been a "stand alone" bill he would have supported it.

That has been proven to be an untrue myth promoted by conservatives.

Sen. Ted Cruz wrongly claimed that a 2013 Hurricane Sandy relief bill was “filled with pork and unrelated spending,” estimating that “two-thirds of what was spent in that bill had little or nothing to do with Hurricane Sandy.”

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, whose state was heavily affected by Sandy, called that claim “an absolute falsehood” and then accused Cruz of repeating “reprehensible lies.”

We wouldn’t use the “L” word, but we do find that at least two-thirds of the bill was related to Hurricane Sandy — the opposite of what Cruz said.

Cruz is now dealing with hurricane relief efforts in his home state of Texas, after Hurricane Harvey made landfall on Aug. 25 as a category 4 storm. In the days since, the storm has dumped more than 50 inches of rain in some parts of Houston. There are at least 30 confirmed or suspected deaths due to the storm, reports the New York Times.

The Washington Post Fact Checker looked at Cruz’s claim and found little in the Sandy relief bill that could be considered pork-barrel spending, or “local members of Congress spending on their pet projects,” as Cruz also said.

I see that your fake news streams are still going strong, as you keep dumping as much fake news on us as Harvey did rain on texas!

Conservative Texans don’t see a contradiction.

That's because there is none. Every state should fight the federal government when they over reach. Just because others roll over every time the feds growl doesn't mean state governments that care about their citizens should do the same.

As far as the "help" goes, Texans are taxpayers , too. End of subject.

If there was only one third of pork in the bill that was one third too much. Let's see how much the Rino's and rhe Dems try to stuff into this new one that will be called for.

Cruz issue was that only one third would have been spent immediately as emergency funds. The rest was set to be long term spending of which would not get spent until as late as 2021
