Salty:The problem is that many churches have stopped giving physical aid, because the govt is doing the mission of the church.
Crabtownboy: I believe it is the other way around. Churches were not doing their share and thus government programs were instituted.
Crabtownboy:
A conservative, in the modern context, says I have mine and I want more and I do not want to help others regardless of how much they need help.
Salty: Crabby, you sure do write some great fiction!
Crabtownboy: My statement came directly from the mouth of a conservative workmate. We were good friends but did agreed on little.
Crabtownboy: The preaching of each person should take care of themselves completely ignores the fact that there are people who, through no fault of their own, cannot help themselves. The ultra-conservative says, "Tough."[/quote]
Salty: You MIGHT be right about the ultra-conservatives, but the mainline conservative will say, at least try to help yourself.
The motto of the conservative is "Give a man a fish, he eats for a day, teach him how to fish, and he eats for a lifetime.
Crabtownboy: I agee for those who can it is much better to teach them to fish. However, for those who cannot fish ... because of age, ill health, etc. we should be willing to share of our bounty and help them.
Salty; BTW, a definition of liberal is "to give freely"
I don't mind giving freely to whom I wish to help, I just don't want Crabby and other Liberals giving freely of MY MONEY to just anybody.
Crabtownboy: Then convince Christians to give enough that government programs will not be needed.
