absolutely an overkill.
16 times ?
I don't like blaming police immediately but, really, they should be taught to shoot non-lethally, and I don't mean tasers.
if they were 'trained' that way in the academies, then they should re-train.

maybe try training with........lassos ?

seriously, overkill.

Now when I asked my question about this in another thread, I was told it wasn't an honest question. I wanted to know if police officers are trained to shoot to kill unarmed suspects?

It just seems like there would be some sort of training taking place that teaches police to apprehend suspects without killing them especially if there is no visible weapon.

"Jennings was suicidal and had just left the hospital three hours earlier..."

Suicide by cop, then blame the cop...

There were 16 shots, but how many police officers were there? If there were 8, that means that only two shots were fired per officer. Which is not overkill. We need to know how many officers there were before making a judgement like this.

I do not know in this part of the world.
In my previous part of the world, they were.
Being a cop is one of the professions considered "macho", for want of a better word.
I guess it is kind of a culture.
Look at those cops out there, especially the younger ones.
They pump iron, they run, part of their training is armed combat.
The same stuff that marines and soldiers and airmen and sailors go through in basic training.
Then the "us vs them" attitude seems to just grow when they're on the streets already.
When at work they don't think of it as being "at work" like the ordinary working folks do, they think of it as being "on the job".
Listen to their jargon.
and before any and all blame is dumped on them, you need to understand, it's the same thing for those on the other side of the fence.
The thugs and the lowlifes they deal with on a daily basis have their own cultures and sub-cultures as well.
The cops and the judges and such like are the enemies.
They consider themselves a tight crew, brothers, sisters, whatever you want to call it.
They'd be happy to see the cops dead, not just wounded, but dead.
You and I, they mostly often call "civilians".

It just seems like there would be some sort of training taking place that teaches police to apprehend suspects without killing them especially if there is no visible weapon.

There's none, I think.
They're trained to take down suspects and use all force necessary when their intent is to take the suspect alive, otherwise.......
just like the average 9-5 joe, they want to go home to their families.
harsh.
but that's the real world.
not everything can be dealt with on a "Christian" basis.

There is such an overwhelming need for more CIT officers, though some of these stories happen even then.

The mentally ill are often released from medical care too soon, or do not receive it. Families and caregivers are overburdened with caring for those who are not receiving adequate help and often need to be in a facility. But - it just doesn't happen and since it does not, this type of training really needs to be mandatory for all officers.

That said - if shooting an unarmed person 16 times after threatening to shoot dad if he helped his son, if this is true, better not be how these officers get trained!

you can look at it that way, but, I look at it as an overkill.
if there were 8 officers, they would not be bunched up in front of the kid.
they would've been in a formation where they would have the kid full front, and sideways, before them.
but we don't know that.
and for that, I blame the guys who call themselves reporters.
they didn't give the public EVERYTHING the public should know.

It's just sad and it breaks my heart. There just sees like if there is some other way to diffuse the situation or take the person into custody without using deadly force, why not use it?

If you've got 20 cops and 1 unarmed suspect, who gives the okay for all 20 cops to raise their guns and start shooting?

Where does the article mention the cops threatened to shoot dad?

Anyway, from the article:
Jennings’ aunt insists the 18-year-old was unarmed but might have made a movement cops mistook as reaching for a gun.

That's how you get shot 16 times.

There were six cops, according to one news source.

it looks like they first shot him with bean bags (non-lethal), then they shot him with lethal rounds. 16 rounds divided by six cops, equals 2 rounds per cop, remainder 4 rounds. so at least 4 cops decided to pull the trigger 3 times.

from the article:

“It was like six — six officers, and one cop yelled, ‘Bag him!’ And they bagged him,” she said. “And he kind of puffed up a little bit, and then they bagged him two more times, and then like 16 shots rang out, and they shot him. And he fell to the ground.”

So, was it 16 shots, or "like" 16 shots? Are we basing this on bullet holes, or someone who is guessing?

tried searching for an autopsy report, but turned up nada.
I guess those white folks will have to loot and riot for an autopsy report to come up.

Sorry - it was apparently the uncle, not the dad. It is on other news sources. The aunt said her husband was right by the teen and wanted to tackle him, but police said they'd shoot him if he did.

Why would all 8 fire two shots? Was it so they could be in on the kill?

Ottawa Police Chief Dennis Butler said officers did what they were trained to do.

"They reacted based upon the training that they've been given from the academy,"

8 cops and no tasers? Right.

Smith recalled that around six officers responded, and two of them had helped save Jennings’ life by taking him to the hospital after his overdose just days before.

“It was like six — six officers, and one cop yelled, ‘Bag him!’ And they bagged him,” she said. “And he kind of puffed up a little bit, and then they bagged him two more times, and then like 16 shots rang out, and they shot him. And he fell to the ground.”

6 cops with bean bags vs one teenager with a bb gun, maybe. Anyone can see how the cops might have thought their lives were in danger. The kid might have put an eye out.

Too many arm-chair police Captains and Commissioners in this world and on the board. Let the examination committee tender its report before you start making conclusions!
