Missouri's been scoring 40 points a game all year long, so the fact they didn't let those big wide receivers run any wilder than usual is probably as much a credit to their defense as anything.

Maybe he means limited to only one running back who's a finalist for the Heisman?

 That's the only context in which it makes sense, for sure.

When you're talking about option offense, it's a scheme that works, very hard to defend - especially when you have an exceptional RB - and there is no need to break open the playbook unless you need to.

I have coached varsity, and here is the progression:

    1) Dive, and keep diving until they stop you.
    2) Pitch, and keep pitching until they stop you. When the defense aligns itself to stop the pitch, go back to #1. Do these two things until they stop both. In either case, the defense will align to stop the run or the pitch, and you can take advantage of that.
    3) QB Keep.

Option ball doesn't need much more than this, as long as the blocking is right. What looks like a "limited run game" can actually get fairly complicated, and it's actually harder on the O line - knowing their assignments. The result is that all the plays look the same, but they're not.

Throw in a few passes and some sweeps to keep the defense on their heels, and you have a game plan.

    Good stuff, USN.

I'd still love to know what revmitchell means by "limited running game."

I found some information today on Deadspin that may make you rethink who's going to beat who.

This is enough for me to rethink whether Auburn is going to win. I've never thought that Florida State was going to demolish them, but after watching Auburn roll up 900 yards rushing against Alabama and Missouri, I did think that Auburn would win. I haven't heard anybody compare FSU 2013 to Notre Dame 2012, and the article on Deadspin points this out.

It's true that FSU has annihilated every opponent, which is exactly what really good teams should do against clearly inferior teams.

It's given me enough to reconsider who's going to beat who on January 6th.

Florida State hasn't seen a rushing attack like this one for Auburn. Missouri allowed only 119 yards per game on the ground this year, Florida State only gave up 116.5. But Mizzou got swamped by the two-back attack of Nick Marshall and Tre Mason, and Mizzou had seen a plethora of great running backs this season. They stopped 'em all until that SEC championship game.

Florida State won't know what hit 'em. Mason will run for over 200 yards behind that big, efficient offensive line, and Florida State's lack of consistently facing top-tier competition throughout the season will show up in the third quarter when their defense is gasping for air -- kinda like my Tigers were last week -- wondering how in the world they're ever gonna stop Mason.

The answer is, they aren't. 38-24, Auburn. Another SEC team lofts the BCS trophy.

I would love to see that. It isn't going to happen but I would love for it too.

Bring on the playoffs for next season's college football...

Hopefully, it will get to 8 teams, 16 even better, but never more than 16 IMO!

I agree on not more than 16 and I don't even want to see that many. I don't even want to see 8.

It is hard to argue that anyone below #5 has a legitimate chance at a national championship. The system has its flaws, but there is a good chance the sportswriters and coaches do manage to narrow it down to the three or four best teams in the nation, the positioning of those teams being the only real debate. Eight is more than enough, and probably too many.

Then again, if the playoffs were in place this year, the argument would be that Missouri, Ohio State and maybe Baylor can make a good case for being one of the top four, rather than down the totem pole as they stand. And yet again, make it eight teams this year, and Oregon and South Carolina have an argument, but not much of one. There will always be debate, unless the whole season gets turned into a playoff, and that would be ridiculous.
