So let me get this straight Fox, the standard by which you would judge the 'temperature' of our spirituality is something you would add to God's Word? It would seem to me that you are implying, and please help me out here if I am wrong, but it seems like you are implying that people who do not adhere to your extra biblical standard concerning alcohol are lukewarm Christians.

There is a standard Fox, there is a plumbline, and it is our Lord Jesus Christ, and he is revealed to us through God's word and God's word alone.

You would add to God's word and add additional requirements for those you would call 'on fire' for God. You know Jesus had something to say about that.

As to the entire alcohol in cooking argument; whether all the alcohol cooks out or not does not really matter if you have a proper Biblical view of alcohol consumption. What alcohol remains is of a low enough amount that you would commit gluttony long before drunkenness. It is only if you have the extra Biblical view that any consumption is a sin that it would be a problem for you.

However, I don’t find it necessary to cook with alcohol. Replacing the alcoholic ingredients with broth, water, or other seasoning seems to work just fine. The taste is a bit different. Your Irish stew and my beef stew probably taste a bit different, but I like my stew just fine.

When I did consume alcohol I found that drinking different beverages could complement the food and often the beverage consumed matched or at least was related to the alcoholic ingredients. The way the beverage and food tastes mixed and complemented one another is one of the things I miss about alcohols. There are still many times when I take a bite of something and immediately think, “You know what would go great with this.”

The biggest reason I don’t cook with alcohol is that I don’t trust myself to keep the ingredients in my house. A second reason would be that it would increase that desire.

I'm absolutely right there with you. However it's interesting that there are those who DO condemn drinking a beverage but feel there's nothing wrong with cooking with it - but the alcohol is still there even when cooked like my stew. I HAVE found a few recipes that absolutely would not taste the same if there was no alcohol in it (like my wine-braised Italian sausages - a family favorite) but I've definitely cooked many recipes without it.

Then you are absolutely doing the right thing for yourself. I have no desire to start imbibing on what's in my kitchen cabinet, although I don't have the ingredients for margharitas in there. THAT is my weakness.

Speaking of margharitas and stumbling.... LOL DH and I went to a Mexican restaurant we love and had dinner one night. I REALLY was in the mood for a margharita and it was in our early times of doing the ministry with the college group. We had made this decision to not drink but I was SOOOO tempted. Well, I ordered the drink then as the waiter was now taking our dinner order, I cancelled the drink. As we were eating dinner, who showed up next to our table but a family who's 2 kids were in our college ministry!! Wowza! If THAT wasn't a message from God that I made the right choice!!! You never know who might walk up and say "Hi" and who might struggle with our choice to drink. I also don't advocate hiding it, so it's a tough road. But a glass of wine with dinner (a nice thick, juicy steak screams for it) will certainly not send you to hell or make you less of a Christian. At all. :)

Dear tentmaker, I am adding to God's Word? No not so friend for it is you and others on here that twist the precious Word of God to satisfy your carnal minds.Let us get something straight sir, first of all I am not at all convinced you are even a Christian. For one to say that our Blessed Lord was a alcohol drinker when He specifically said in Proverbs not to even look upon the wine is blasphemies at best. I know all your arguments for I have been on here for a long time and frankly I don't care what "Strong" says, but "what sayeth the Scripture". I have come back here for a few days to see if the BB is still as liberal and worldly as it was before and it has only gotten worse. You people have a lot in common with the people in ICor.3. Why do you want to be as fleshly as possible? If you really are ignorant of good Bible teaching I put a lot of blame on myself. However I am not convinced you are not trying to "pervert the Gospel of Christ". For that reason I feel sorry for you folks. You will mock me and continue to twist Scripture to suit your nature but remember in spite of what you might think there are some Baptist that are saved and still serving the Lord and still telling the lost about the saving grace of Christ and trying to live as Godly as possible. The rest of you beer drinking baptist better enjoy what life you have here! You can't say this old preacher hasn't warned you, Matt.7:21-23. Please don't threaten me with ...I am going to report you. I am gone, you can have this mess all to yourself!!

Brother Fox, I doubt if we can ever come to an agreement on this issue. I see you adding to God's word and you see me twisting it. You seem to be reading a lot of things into my posts and others that are not there. I would encourage you to pray and study God's word on this issue for yourself and I will make you the promise to do the same.

I don't doubt your intentions or your salvation brother and your goal of keeping Christians away from alcohol is good. They should be warned and the Bible has many warnings against drunkenness. Certainly we live in a society today where alcohol and other substances are easier to get than ever before.

I am a little younger than you brother, but I grew up in dry counties (technically I live in one now but that technically covers a lot of ground). I was active in political campaigns to keep liquor out of our counties and ban "by the drink" proposals in 3 different states.

I don't think anyone on this forum is encouraging drunkenness, I certainly am not. But what I won't do is add to scripture and make a scriptural command where there is none. Now I know we don't agree on that, and that is ok. I still appreciate your zeal and respect your beliefs.

I know it is a board rule, but if you want to doubt my salvation I don't really care brother. Not to be flippant, but you don't get to decide that, its already been settled elsewhere. I do appreciate your comments even though we disagree and encourage you to stick around. We may find something to agree on later.

Fox, if the Scripture was as clear as you and others say it is we wouldn't be having this discussion.

The problem is it isn't. Other than condemning drunkeness, Scripture can be used to support either position. What is left are cultural situations which are dealt with in other parts of Scripture.

Me, I'm as dry as the Mojave. But, when I attend a Russian Baptist Church during a commemoration of the Lord's Supper, I have no problems with taking a sip of wine as one of the elements.

Squire, Breaking my own rule, however using your intellectual reasoning we have a problem with Salvation. For in the community in which I live we have JW's, a group called Latter Day Saints, a catholic church and a church built by William T. Sleeper (the man wrote "Ye Must Be Born Again" and "Jesus I Come") which now has rock and roll bands and dancing in the church building. I realize some on here wouldn't have any problem with that. All these differ on the doctrine of Salvation with me. Am I to say now there must be a problem with John 3:16? No! Not so with alcohol either. You read the post of the dear lady that hides her beer from little kids at the restaurant. God sure was in that wasn't He...whew. Bless her heart. Wouldn't you love to have her and her husband in charge of your youth group!! Always something to be thankful about. :wavey:

There is a difference. There are clear statements of Scripture such that to deny them is to deny the meaning of words and grammar. Then there are matters which are logically deduced from the former. Good men can disagree on the second. However, disagreements on the first bring up questions of heresy.

I'm guessing your misinformation here is speaking of my own post. It was a margharita and not a beer and it was a 20 and 21 year old, not a child. It might help your argument if you have your facts straight.

Yes, many are happy that my husband and I have worked in youth ministry for over 25 years. We are now raising 2 teenagers (currently 16 and 18) who do not drink nor have a desire to. We've taught them the truth about alcohol and not the rhetoric that many in the Christian world teaches. I'm not sure that they will ever take a drink but at this point in time, I don't see that happening.

I have to say that I really pity you and the jaded view you have of God and His church. In this thread, I have had to report two of your posts for personal attacks and questioning one's salvation - both which are against the rules. Your testimony is quite tarnished in my view and I'm sure in many others. I'll be praying for you.

Whenn I was a kid there was many a night when I was awaken by hearing my mom screaming because my dad was beating on her. In fact one time he broke one of his fingers. He has never been drunk and seldom ever drank any kind of alcoholic beverage. anytime he ever drank any alcoholic beverage it was always with relatives and never at night. So alcohol was never an issue.

A man who is filled with anger does not need alcohol to help him get angry.

He stopped hitting my mom when I stood against him and told him that he would have to contend with me and the police if he ever hit her again. It is amazing how his anger has stopped.

Good for you! Children need to know the truth not the politically correct version and later find out the politician was wrong.

When I was younger I was given some alcohol and I will never forget drinking it and wondering how anyone could like it. We did the same thing to our daughter and she said, "Yuck, how could anyone like this?" It took away her curiosity immediately. I also explained how it was made. She knew my parents had at one time owned a vineyard.

I remember several years ago preaching on the first part of John 15 and telling the congregation that my parents had been grape growers. I saw some rather strange faces staring back at me.

Your childish rant aside...you're not supposed to question the salvation of others here.

No one's mocking you. Many of us pity you. You are so ensconced in legalism that you have no joy.

BTW, don't let the back door hit you on the way out.

The conviction of total abstention (including unfermented grape juice at the Lord's Table) seems to me to be an American (and those who were discipled by Americans) phenomena.

Other lineages of Baptist thought (the German\Continental and Russian\Slavic) do not hold to total abstention. As I noted earlier, the Russians use wine (at one church I attend they use Mogan David). Though they arte otherwise dry. I understand the Germans don't look down on the odd glass of beer at lunch.

A few times in Korea, we used water and stale bread for communion. Another time we used some alcohol a lad brought back from his leave and again hard bread.

We accepted it in the faith it was served.

    Cheers,

    Jim
