I am anti-creedal:
In Theory, the creed is not believed to take precedence over the Scrtipture.
In Theory, the Scriptures are paramount and the Creed exists only in service to the Biblical text.
In practice, the creed shapes and supervenes the way the denomination's adherents read the Bible.
In practice, they read not the Bible, they read their creeds and confessions restated using different verbiage in the Bible.
My Father in Law is a Presbyterian and I do love having Theological discussions with him. The other day I noticed on his bookshelf an enormous multi-volume set of tomes which were a Commentary on the greater Catechism.
Not a Commentary on the Bible....a Commentary on the Catechism itself.
I could not help but think it to be an enormous waste of the author's time and effort.
Imagine if those countless hours were spent simply reading the Scriptures themselves.
