Mark--You certainly did not upset ME with your question. I merely tried to give you a response to what I thought you were asking about! Sorry for the misunderstanding, and hope you did not take my post as being offended--I guess my answer was WAY too long-winded! Your question was heartfelt and should not offend anyone--I just didn't know what your "heart" was asking!

And that IS a good question--if they all wore robes--what WAS the difference--and what is SPECIFICALLY intended with the verse? But it still seems to me that the basic CONCEPT behind the law is the same--don't try to pretend you're a man if you're a woman and vice versa. It might be impossible to determine EXACTLY what was meant.

And, I'm new to the BB's here, too. I LIKE the fact that we can debate and converse--but I don't want to upset anyone either!

On page 482 of Illustrated Manners and Customs of the Bible, edited by J. I. Packer M. C. Tenney (Thomas Nelson, 1980), there is an entry (in an otherwise lengthy entry on clothing) on Deut. 22.5. It says that women wore cothing similar to that of men, but men had certain ornaments, such as a signet ring, that women were not supposed to wear. Also, men could not wear the outer robe of a woman. Apparently, there were enough differences so that some things men wore, women did not; and some things women wore, men did not.

Continuing, the book has more info. Pages 482-484: The Hebrew woman's outer garmet was different from a man's; "it was longer, with enough border and fringe to cover the feet (Is 47.2; Jer. 13.22)" and "was secured at the waist by a girdle." Women wore more jewely, including nose rings and anklets, and their jewelry differed from men's in certain details. Only Hebrew and Egyptian women wore earrings (Assyrian men and women wore earrings).

The Hebrew women wore their hair long and braided, often using combs and hairpins.

So there were clear differences in how the men and women dressed.

This was my question, if they did dress the same, then what was this verse about? It seems like I'm making people real upset with this, that wasn't my intent,so I think I'll just move on and let you'll settle down.I thought we were here to discuss but evidently not about certain issues.I'm sorry it wasn't my intent to offend women wearing pants. Mark
The difference would have been length, men's robes were shorter for work and war purposes.

Well, so you would, say then if a skirt was made just for a man it would be o.k.? It sounds likw a double standard.Yes bloomers were worn, I just read about that, although I figured they were much more like underwear. If they did wear simular clothing back then, as we know they did, then what was this passage talking about.
I think these bloomers are like our modern day Boxer shorts just bigger. MAybe it is a sin to wear briefs. When Bill Clinton was ask boxers or briefs he replied briefs. I wonder if that is where he got on the wrong track?

Hey now, let's be careful. There are a lot of folk on the BB that would have us disregard the teachings of the Old Testament! Afterall, we are under grace now, not the law. So all you guys that want to wear a skirt to the church you don't bring your tithe to, then have it- you are under grace now

(Please, no ugly pm's- just a little funny (although pretty accurate) to lighten the mood on this one)

Deuteronomy 22.5
pertaineth - according to my dictionary =
Pertain = to belong (to) as attribute, appendage, part etc. to relate, to apply, to have reference (to).
I suppose it means women should not wear clothes made for or belonging to a man , and men should not wear clothes made for or belonging to a woman. This is probably to avoid the genders being mistaken for each other......... like they are these days with some of the unisex clothing we have available. It is difficult, sometimes to tell male from female, and this shouldn`t be so.

By the way...on the tithing thing...we ARE trying to apply Old Testament truth....properly and rightly divided...but THAT is another thread. ;)

Clarification:

Deut. 22:5

My Pastor believes that it means that women cannot wear pants.

I believe that it means women who intentionly dress in men's clothing in order to present the sexuality of a man.

My wife wears women slacks and dresses. I have yet to confuse her sexuality. That being said--If a woman feels a conviction over wearing slacks, then I believe that she should not wear them, and I would never question her conviction. My pastor is a godly man, and his walk probably makes mine seem insignificant; however, I still have not had the conviction that women should not wear slacks.
