Dangerous Devices

"Robert Colville, author of a new book on the increasing speed of modern life, The Great Acceleration, refers to people’s behaviour with mobile devices as less multitasking than hummingbird-like."
Excerpted from the "Technology Slaves".

The author goes on to put this new trend in historical perspective with the long line of previous innovations like - back in Plato's time - writing!

Yet the author's bottom line is not satisfying. I do believe that he should have followed where he was going with the quote I excerpted. I believe texting and "selfieing" and always being tethered to a device seriously hinders the ability - no, even the desire - to nurture independent, deep-rooted thought. This is why there is so much more heat than light in the current social spheres. It is much easier to vent emotion than to express thought. Our very devices that give us so much information also, it we are not careful, rob us of the wisdom to use that information.

Iunno about that. I think people are just bad at being wise in general. The problem is access to being able to speak on subjects they know nothing about any time they want, results in a showcase of sheer stupidity.

Perhaps access to social media has merely enabled people to "yell at the TV" where more people can hear them. The dumbing down came much, much earlier.

No, I didn't read the links. No anonymous access to them.

It actually depends on the people's approach on how to use the modern devices, nowadays. Though, most are not using it in a right way. There are so many bashers out there where their behaviors are intolerable.

You should see the crapshow that is Tiktok. A large portion of the users are children in middle school or younger, and they love to leave rude comments on others' videos to mock them. It finally got irritating enough that I turned my comments to mutuals only. (I got tired of having to delete and block at least one comment and user for each video I uploaded.)

Considering a lot of these kids say things that are racist, antisematic, or ableist etc because they think it's hilarious and edgy, I weep for gen alpha. (Gen alpha is children born 2010 to present.)

Indeed, I've seen many videos in Tiktok that are unbearable. Sometimes, I do report accounts that are degrading and humiliating.
