It was just fine. Then congress change the start and end dates of DST a few years ago. I have two clocks I bought with a chip were I would not have to change them. They were automatic on the time change. Now I have to change the time zone setting 4 times a year.

Back in late 60s, early 70s, when SC went on DST, there was a florist who, when asked about his opinion of DST, answered thusly - - “I’m not sure my roses can stand this extra hour of daylight!”
Didn’t know the guy personally, but pretty sure he was just jerking the reporter’s chain.

I like DST. I hate it being dark by 2:30 in the day. Being facetious about the time.

Years ago, I read that the reason for the time change was so that kids going to school would not be out in the dark. Thus in the fall, we move our clocks back so it is light around 7:00 AM. However, we could simply move the start time for school back sufficiently so it is light enough for kids to leave for school.

Somehow the states (like Arizona) that do not change their time back and forth get by. I think we all could manage it as well...

In Fairbanks, elementary schools start as early as 7:30AM and as late as 9:15AM so the kids go to school in the dark. Thus in some places it is not feasible to avoid sending the kids out before sunrise. But for the vast majority of people living in the USA, the school start time could be adjusted, rather than changing the time for everybody. Here in California if we were on Daylight Savings Time it would get light about 8:00AM so school could start at 9:00AM or later.

That might be a problem here in Syracuse, - as many of the buses that high school students use are regular city buses ( ie no stop sign, no flashing lights, ect) and if the school hours were to change that would throw off the city buss schedule.

Schools are too integrated into the larger community to change the start and end time. Teachers and school staff have young children in day care, and second jobs. Parents schedule their jobs and lives around the schools.

At the tip of South America, the sun hardly goes down at this time of year. Chile is a fascinating country: I think it is one time zone, but because it is so long, the amount of sunlight is drastically different in the north and south.
