Dead Presidents

Well, since there are official US documents (pardons, etc.) recognizing them as a sovereign nation with which the US was at war, I would say that you can only accept them as a separate nation.

I didn't vote for him in 1964, but only because back then 18 YO people weren't allowed to vote.

The situation our nation faces today in the war on terrorism is unprecedented in U.S. history. Calling a president from the past to face this situation would demand a man who was principled and resolute in the face of the threat. He would have to endure great unpopularity within the US when he took action to stop the terrorism. Thankfully, we have a history of MANY presidents who could step up to this challenge.

 

Definitely FDR. He brought this country through the Great Depression and WWII. Because of FDR, this country became even greater. FDR also had the repect of the world and knew how to work with our allies rather than alienate them.

FDR worked with the Soviet Union during WWII. After the war, the US and the USSR became alienated. Are you saying that this alienation was a mistake that should've been avoided? In doing this, you are condemning the foreign policy of every US President from Truman to Bush I.

Your statement seems to be a shot at the current president, but when examined, it becomes apparent that there are times that it is necessary, prudent, wise, and unavoidable that a president, in the interest of our national security, alienate allies.

 

Absolutely correct, swaim. Ronald Reagan was right to call the Soviet Union the Evil Empire and not follow the idiotic policy of appeasement and isolationism. Bush was equally right to refer to Iran, Iraq, and North Korea as the Axis of Evil. These are men, much like FDR, who know how to confront evil in their time even in the face of popularity of isolationist policy.
