Yes, all of Western Europe (as well as Canada, Australia, New Zealand) have abolished the penalty. It is us and Japan against the rest of the 1st world in maintaining the practice.Originally posted by The Galatian:
The death penalty is good enough for Marxist China, Iran, Iraq, Syria, and a few other rogue states.
Somehow, I don't think it's God at work in maintaining the death penalty.

By the laws of sinful man, yes. But God's laws NEVER change. Read the OT to see what God said about murder and other crimes. It is the commandments of God that we should follow and as I see it, death for murder is one of them. How many of the loved ones left, feel this way? I would venture to say, only a few.Originally posted by Candide:
Capital Punishment is an outdated system. Killing people to prove killing people is wrong solves nothing.
The death penalty was instituted by God before there were any Israelites.Originally posted by Candide:

Suppose a man seized a person and locked his victim in a room, then is caught, convicted, and imprisoned. Would you say "imprisoning people who imprison people is wrong [and] solves nothing"?Originally posted by Candide:

Galatian, I disagree. God is both pro-life and anti-abortion! God also instituted the death penalty.Originally posted by The Galatian:
You've illustrated my point; "Pro-life" and "anti-abortion" are not the same thing.
There's a world of difference between innocent little babies and convicted murderers, Galatian.Originally posted by The Galatian:
Yeah, it's true. And those who want to keep kids alive in the womb are so often happy to kill them after they are born.
I agree but part of being "pro-life" is protecting the innocent from the violent actions of criminals. In fact, there's a difference between "anti-abortion" and "pro-life".
Not true. There's not one known case of an executed murderer ever killing anyone again. It's not necessarily a sin when the state kills a murderer, but in practical terms, it's both ineffective...
As wrong as you are in your other arguments, I have to agree with you here. I believe we do need more oversight in death penalty cases. Not because of large numbers of innocents sent to the gallows (I believe that's still very rare) but, because of the seriousness of the crime and the punishment, we need to do everything we can to see that justice is carried out properly. The pro-death penalty governor of Illinois called a halt to all executions after numerous prisoners on death row turned out to be innocent. In Texas, in the last few decades, a large number of condemned prisoners were cleared before they could be killed. We will never know how many were not fortunate enough, but it's foolish to deny that we saved all of them.
An excellent question and one we all of us on the pro death penalty side need to ask.How many innocent people would you be willing to kill, to be sure you killed murderers?
