death penalty?

FYI, I'm not a fundy...I'm a primitivy.:smilewinkgrin: I knew that Brother Reed.........I use fundamentalist in the sense that one adheres to the fundamentals of the faith once delivered..........I am not a youngster...I remember the old days.

And thank you Baptist from Richmond...It is nice to be read and understood, whether one agrees or not.

I wish if they are going to execute a person that they would go back to public hanging. Society, in their guilt trip, have increasingly been trying to water down how one is killed....a needle to the arm......oh for the noose, the electric chair, and all its malfunctions, the gas chamber, and now I lay me down to sleep.

I have thought for quite a while that those in juvenile detention should be made to witness publican hangings as part of their rehabilitation. I think that many young people in gangs and such do not view death in a realistic way. I think that might be quite an eye-opening experience for them.

 

That's the way I see it.

 

Actually, in many cases I think they don't have much to lose. Their life is so miserable death might be seen as relief.

 

I saw enough death on the battlefield. Ever witness a man with half his face blown off, bleeding to death and all you can do is lay there with him and hold his hand? That is why I said it should be a public spectacle. Not that I would ever support capital punishment, but the disgusting sight should be witnessed by all the do goodies who long for death and destruction.

Scumbag Jeffrey Lundgren is suing to challenge his death sentence. He said it's "cruel and unusual punishment." Why? Because he's too fat, and the procedure might be painful.

Lundgren shot a family of five, including 3 children in 1989 (that's 17 years on our dime for you non-math majors).

Hey, a firing squad would be less discriminatory toward this big guy. Seemed to be his preferred method of execution in 1989...

"cruel and unusual." What an overused and misused phrase.

Now, do I support the troops? I sure do, and I would go overseas in a flash as a chaplain if they would take a man my age.

Is there forgiveness for sin? Yes.

Are there still consequences, following forgiveness? Oftentimes, Yes.

I do support the death penalty. Someone who takes away the rights of other people, i.e. murder or rape, deserves to have no rights. I only wish the punishment were swifter, and less costly for taxpayers.

 

In Canada, thievery was a hanging offence, and hanging were done in public. It became a picnic. People brought lunch baskets and made a day of it.

Whilst the criminal was being hanged for theft, people were busy in the crowds picking pockets......a hangable offence~ Ironic...some deterrent. A people's entertainment, taking great pleasure in watching a person die.

I didn't mean the swift punishment had to be public per se.

 

ANd what about the swift punishment of all those innocent people down through history? Will we also have a swift resurrection, or do we do as the British government did; just write a letter of apology to the family 42 years later?

I am amazed at how many Americans take delight in death. Or, are they so guilty about it they must make it as "humane" as possible? Just needle the arm and let them fall asleep.

Just curious. Do you see I Tim. 1:16 applying to a Christian's attitude toward the death penalty? Paul, who murdered Christians by his own testimony, says he recieved mercy from Jesus Christ as an example of "perfect patience" that was to be followed by future believers.

Just a few verses prior, Paul mentions murderers and those who kill mothers and fathers. He then says he, Paul, was the worst of sinners, a violent agressor and persecutor. We then have the passage about "perfect patience". In Chapter 2, he says we should be praying for all men. He is obviously addressing what a Christian's attitude should be toward the worst of sinners.

It seems clear to me that supporting the death of someone is contrary to "perfect patience", which has been commanded by our Lord as an example we must follow.

Is that a fair rendering of I Tim. 1:16?

I think you are bang on with Timothy..Yes.

I also believe that in the scripture, the application of capital punishment was a state law, and not God's law.

Just as a matter of politics, the USA, I believe, is the last of the free nations to kill people legally.

One of the saddest truths about that is, it is the protestant Christians in the U.S. that have overwhelmingly demanded the death penalty.
