Defiled by the Judgement Hall?

Then led they Jesus from Caiaphas unto the hall of judgment: and it was early; and they themselves went not into the judgment hall, lest they should be defiled; but that they might eat the passover. – John 18:28

How would entering the judgement hall defile someone? why would it keep them from eating the passover?

The judgement hall was full of 'goy' [gentiles].
The 'goy' were eating. It is against the
law of Moses for a Jewish Israeli to break
bread [eat] with a gentile. Thus entering the
judgement hall would make a Jewish Israeli
to be unclean till the next day; 'unclean' means
they cannot enter the Temple.

so, it didn't prevent them from eating the passover? just entering the temple? i'm not clear on this point.

In Numbers 9:6-10 there were unclean men (becaused they touched a dead body), but God commanded that they partake of the Passover feast anyway. was this an exception?

Whether there is OT reference or not, I cannot say. It is clear from Galatians 2:11-14 that some, probably pharisees, held this belief. Also, you might reference Acts 10:28.

hall confused -- they are NOT the same.

The answer to your question is that this particular judgement hall was the place that Pilate held his court. It was a gentile hall of judgement. The Jews could not enter a gentile "unclean" place else they be defiled.
It is really quite simple.

These Jews were so concerned about ceremonial defilement that they MISSED the true defilement. i.e. Illegal condemnation of an innocent MAN.

Since the paschal meal had been eaten the evening before, this is more proof that the whole week was Passover & not just the paschal lamb meal...as if Ezekiel 45:21 wasn't enough.

God showed Peter by His vision of the non-kosher animals that it was then OK in God;s sight to enter a gentile's home. However, Paul had to later remind Peter to not be a hypocrite about it when he found Peter & some other Jews eating at a separate table from the gentiles.

I was looking for a particular reference from the 'law' that says this. especially since the story in Numbers 9 seems to make it okay to be defiled AND eat the Passover.

The were also missing out on the fact that they were offering up the 'real' passover lamb as a sacrifice.

The Numbers 9 passage prohibits eating the Passover until the ritual defilement is past; thus, they are told to mark the Passover on the same day next month.

The notion that entering the home of Gentile creates ritual defilement is found not in the Torah but in the Oral Law, which was considered as binding as the Written Law.
