Look, it's simple.

If it's true: He didn't bring it up because it *might* hurt his chances of being elected.
There is no "if" here. The story has been debunked. It is not true.

Furthermore, it *will* hurt his chances of being elected because some people do believe it. In the Current Events Forum in the topic about the Muslim Senator Ellison, someone has claimed, in all seriousness, that Obama is also a Muslim.

It it's false: He didn't bring it up because it wasn't true, and therefore not an issue.
Also, it is silly to mention all the untrue things about yourself.

It's not worth getting any undergarments in a snitch, bunch or otherwise uncomfortable position.
I disagree - lies should be spoken up against.

Take a look at the web site of the church that Barack Obama attends. It's more like a Jesse Jackson Rainbow Coalition or Black Panthers organization than anything else. That's right - Jesus is never mentioned in their statement of who they are - not even once.... and this is the guy who claims to be a Christian and whom many think will become President. Imagine the
uproar if a candidate attended a church with the same statement, only "white" was substituted for "black".

http://www.tucc.org/about.htm

We are a congregation which is Unashamedly Black and Unapologetically Christian... Our roots in the Black religious experience and tradition are deep, lasting and permanent. We are an African people, and remain "true to our native land," the mother continent, the cradle of civilization. God has uperintended our pilgrimage through the days of slavery, the days of
segregation, and the long night of racism. It is God who gives us the strength and courage to continuously address injustice as a people, and asa congregation. We constantly affirm our trust in God through cultural expression of a Black worship service and ministries which address the Black Community.

Trinity United Church of Christ adopted the Black Value System written by the Manford Byrd Recognition Committee chaired by Vallmer Jordan in 1981. We believe in the following 12 precepts and covenantal statements. These Black Ethics must be taught and exemplified in homes, churches, nurseries andschools, wherever Blacks are gathered. They must reflect on the following concepts:
Commitment to God
Commitment to the Black Community
Commitment to the Black Family
Dedication to the Pursuit of Education
Dedication to the Pursuit of Excellence
Adherence to the Black Work Ethic
Commitment to Self-Discipline and Self-Respect
Disavowal of the Pursuit of "Middleclassness"
Pledge to make the fruits of all developing and acquired skills availableto the Black Community Pledge to Allocate Regularly, a Portion of Personal Resources for Strengthening and Supporting Black Institutions
Pledge allegiance to all Black leadership who espouse and embrace the Black Value System
Personal commitment to embracement of the Black Value System.
The Pastor as well as the membership of Trinity United Church of Christ iscommitted to a 10-point Vision:

A congregation committed to ADORATION.
A congregation preaching SALVATION.
A congregation actively seeking RECONCILIATION.
A congregation with a non-negotiable COMMITMENT TO AFRICA.
A congregation committed to BIBLICAL EDUCATION.
A congregation committed to CULTURAL EDUCATION.
A congregation committed to the HISTORICAL EDUCATION OF AFRICAN PEOPLE IN DIASPORA.
A congregation committed to LIBERATION.
A congregation committed to RESTORATION.
A congregation working towards ECONOMIC PARITY.

That's a nice find Shiloh. Here's what your suggestion would sound like.

  • We are a congregation which is Unashamedly white...
  • Our roots in the white religious experience and tradition are deep...
  • We are a European people and remain "true to our native land"
  • We constantly affirm our trust in God through cultural expression of a White worship service and ministries which address the White Community.
  • Trinity United Church of Christ adopted the White Value System...
  • These White Ethics must be taught and exemplified in homes, churches, nurseries and schools, wherever Whites are gathered.

I thought Obama was a multi-cultural tolerant type. Turns out he's a black nationalist at best and a racist at worse. Why do Christians support this guy again?

Great find Shiloh, in my mind much more important than any loose, supposed Muslim connections.

If this guys truly subscribes to this church's philosophy he would be a racist.

From the mission statement:
The fortunate who are among us combine forces with the less fortunate to become agents of change for God who is not pleased with America’s economic mal-distribution!
Sounds like communism to me.

It is my belief his real goal is the VP slot. He has no chance to beat Hillary.

Wow! Some church. I'd almost rather he was a practicing muslim.

I agree with Rufus. I think they want the people to see what this guy really is and then all of a sudden Hillary will look good. It's sort of like the lesser of the two evils.

Faith doesn't mean that you don't have doubts.

You need to come to church in the first place precisely because you are first of this world, not apart from it. You need to embrace Christ precisely because you have sins to wash away - because you are human and need an ally in this difficult journey.

It was because of these newfound understandings that I was finally able to walk down the aisle of Trinity United Church of Christ on 95th Street in the Southside of Chicago one day and affirm my Christian faith. It came about as a choice, and not an epiphany. I didn't fall out in church. The questions I had didn't magically disappear. But kneeling beneath that cross on the South Side, I felt that I heard God's spirit beckoning me. I submitted myself to His will, and dedicated myself to discovering His truth.

That's a path that has been shared by millions upon millions of Americans - evangelicals, Catholics, Protestants, Jews and Muslims alike; some since birth, others at certain turning points in their lives. It is not something they set apart from the rest of their beliefs and values. In fact, it is often what drives their beliefs and their values.

It's the same place. How tied to it is he I wonder?

He's doing a book-signing there on the 28th.

Just curious Shiloh, for the purposes of using this on another board, where is your information that this is the Church Obama attends regularly. I see where he is a guest speaker, but do you have something saying this is his church? Thanks.

Exclusive: UCC member Sen. Barack Obama discusses faith and politics

Written by Barb Powell
Thursday, 29 June 2006

CLEVELAND -- Calling the propensity of media programmers to feature a particular religious viewpoint “unfortunate,” UCC member Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) -- in an exclusive United Church News interview June 28, 2006 -- said that he hoped for change.

SNIP

“Just as my pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright from Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago, welcomed me as a young man years ago...

SNIP

Obama used his own faith story, and likened his path to becoming a member of Trinity UCC to that trod by “millions upon millions of Americans -- evangelicals, Catholics, Protestants, Jews and Muslims alike; some since birth, others at certain turning points in their lives.”
