New York's Democratic political establishment came out in force for embattled U.S. Rep. Charles Rangel on Wednesday, packing a sold-out fundraiser to praise Rangel's service to the city and state over a 40-year career recently tainted by ethics charges.

"I've been to a lot of funerals, and this damn sure isn't a funeral," Rangel said to loud cheers.

Hundreds of supporters crowded into the Grand Ballroom at Manhattan's Plaza Hotel for the fundraiser, which was tied to Rangel's 80th birthday. Rangel seemed ebullient as he moved through the crowd, joined by his wife and daughter. Singer Dionne Warwick led the crowd in serenading him to her hit song "That's What Friends are For."

The show of public support for Rangel among the state's highest officials was the most striking element of the evening, given that many of them - including U.S. Sens. Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand and gubernatorial candidate Andrew Cuomo - will face voters in November.

At one time long long ago the Stoic Romans had the position of "Censor" as a political position to monitor & judge all sorts of things....Malfeasance, Extortion, Extravagances , Corruption of any type. Most of the time this individual could punish with heavy fines & even on rare occasions death. After years of heroic opposition to the nature of man, they eliminated the position.

Perhaps my friends we should revive the position today, however I don't know of anyone brave enough to take the position & how we could legislate it. Case in point, the recently Late Matt Simmons, the primary whistle blower from BP (Google that name) lies in a morgue today because he conveniently dround in his hot-tub the other day. Perhaps he knew too much! Hmmmm, is that in the News? However New York's own Charlie Rangel makes the news & what a side show that is.. Granted Chuckie was a Korean War Vet & Granted he's done allot for Harlem but laws against tax cheats should be no respecters of persons no matter who sings at his 80'th birthday!

So I wonder if the American Public's outrage is not misguided & misaligned by the Press as cover greater plots against the people.

Do we really want to rail at Ole Stumblin, Bumblin Charlie the "Clown" Rangle or do we really want to know who is working day & night to screw you over. Dig deeper & keep your eyes open my friends.

I didn't think he'd get this kind of support, even from Democrats. I don't understand why they want him to just get a pass for what he's done. It's like admitting that they're really simply in it to abuse power and rip off tax payers.

It's extremely ironic that what he did, tax fraud and evasion, comes from the party that constantly wants to raise the tax burdens on us.

Fact is this is the nature of politicians. I remember the Republicans stayed supportive of President Nixon until just before he resigned.

Rangel has done alot for his constituency in Harlem. He may be a crook but he done favors for lots of politicans and now he will call in those IOU's.

Rangel, besides being an unrepentent crook, is strongly pro union. They do sorta fit together.

Until they found out for sure he was covering criminal acts.

Then they went after him with a vengence and forced him to resign. Senate and House Republicans met with Nixon and told him they would vote to impeach and convict him if he did not resign. So your comment , while it makes a good sound bite, unintentionally highlights the differences in the way democrats and republicans handle their crooks.


Democrats already know Rangel and Waters are crooks and they still support them.

By the way, that meeting with the Rep took place 2 days before he resigned and 2 weeks after the smoking gun tape came out. Even then there were Senators and Rpresentatives who told him they would never vote to impeach him.

As jaingner mentioned, Tom Delay is an example. The Rep don't have a corner on morality. It does no good to act like we would treat a powerful rep any different.

Also, there has been no trial for either of these people. They have simply been charged. They will now go to a "trial".

There may have been some that took that stance, but there were enough powerful Republicans that threatened him, that he had to resign and he knew it.

Where are the democrats urging Rangel and Waters to resign or be impeached? They're the majority. They could impeach them easily.

Nobody said Republicans had a corner on morality. They don't. But there is undeniable proof they take action against their crooks in Congress and democrats don't, until they absolutely can't do anything else.

I'm no fan of Charlie, but those of you who scream "Constitution" all the time seem to forget the principle of innocent until proven guilty by a court of law.

Tax error? everyone commits tax errors. the situation is so bad that half the people who go short form pay someone to do their taxes. I have not read "my" income tax paperwork for 40 years. Most of that time The Wife signed it for me same as she signs my pay check. I would be disappointed if Charlie wasted his time on his tax returns.

This post shows either stunning ignorance of the facts, or a willful dismissal of the aforementioned facts. Maybe both.

Rangel didn't report thousands and thousands of dollars in income. What he failed to report wasn't income that was buried on page 300 of some report. This guy, according to the accusations, hid money, and willfully and intentionally did not pay taxes on it.

Furthermore, this guy heads up the lawmakers that write our tax code! I liken it to a church treasurer who pilfers from the plate. It's wrong for anyone--but some are held to an especially high standard, and for them to transgress in that area is egregious.

Bill, I can't help it that you don't have the ethical fortitude to take your responsibilities with regards to taxes seriously.

And it's too bad you expect so very little out of those who lead this country. Not sure whether that's due to your blind allegiances to all things union, or your dismissal of your responsibilities as a citizen. Maybe it's both.

Fortunately, many in this country are willing to ask more of our leaders than you are: "If you can't manage much of anything else...at the very least, don't be a crook!"

One thing about it: If Rangel's actions don't bother you, that's about as low as you can set the bar.

I have never cheated on my taxes. I became a tax protestor years ago when Irwin Schiff came through town. I sent them a check sans paperwork. (Before he was put in the slammer) The IRS froze my pay check, I filed in IRS small claims court, and we made a deal. I gave them the paperwork and paid them a few hundred dollars.

I have NEVER been audited. Maybe they are keeping their part of the deal. (Actually, no one ever has to submit to an audit before going to court.)

Peter Schiff is Irwin's kid.
