Destruction of Doctrines or Fundamentals???

AVL1984

<img src=../ubb/avl1984.jpg>
What, if any, doctrines or fundamentals of the Christian faith are destroyed through the use of the Modern Versions vs. the king james VERSION?
I've heard it preached from pulpits of the SBC and IFB that the MV's tear down the doctrines and fundamentals, yet they all fail to address the underlying texts, etc. Please don't let this thread degenerate into "circular reasoning" or long unfounded threads of scripture that allegedly support your position. If there is not a few concise verses, please, just refer us to them by giving the text source.

Thanks.

If the premise is faulty, will one of the moderators who can word it better please do so?

Thanks.

AVL - People always speak of the MV's "removing" the deity of Christ by changing Lord Jesus Christ to just Lord Jesus or just Jesus Christ.

What they fail to see is that the underlying Greek of the MV (the USB/Nestles) have not added all the extra "Lords" or "Christs" that the Byzantine documents added.

It is NOT that the deity is removed. It is that well-meaning Eastern Orthodox scribes ADDED it in (as they fought the Arian heresy).

Now SOME paraphrases (like TEV/Good News for Modern Man) have INTENTIONALLY destroyed doctrine as per their writer's own remarks (removing the blood of Christ).

I understand the paraphrases have done that, and thanks for bringing that into the conversation. For arguments sake, let's try to avoid the paraphrases. I don't know many people who use them except for commentary.

The message, which is a paraphrase, is used quite extensively in the United Methodist Church. This was the major reason I left the UMC and went to an IFBC.

Yes, the UMC is full of that kind of thing. My great uncle was a methodist preacher until his death at the age of 86. He used the KJV or the RSV. He totally rejected the paraphrases. He was more baptistic than most baptists I know of, yet he remained with the Methodists, I believe as a "Free Methodist".

Do early manuscripts omit the word "Christ" at many places where it is included in the textus receptus and thereby show themselves to be unchristian?
The Gospels always speak of our Lord as Jesus. The book of Acts uses the word "Jesus" alone 35 times, "Jesus Christ" 10 times, and "the Lord Jesus Christ" 6 times in the KJV. It would be quite erroneous to conclude from this that the author of Acts does not like the word "Christ." Different writers show different preferences in this regard. As scribes copied manuscripts in century after century it was easy for a scribe unintentionally to write a longer form even where a shorter one occurred, so the word Christ occurs more frequently in later manuscripts than in earlier ones. Yet even in the latest manuscripts we find that Jesus is often called by shorter terms. The use of longer phrases in referring to the Lord does not necessarily show greater piety or greater loyalty to Christ.

Thanks Pastor Bob for shedding light on this. On a related thought, I have a friend (member of my church) who only uses the spelling "Saviour" rather than the Americanized "Savior". Felt it more spiritual and pious to use 7 letter, than 6.

We all have areas that we say or practice that makes us feel spiritual, closer to God, pious. Think that is built into the human psyche.

I have read all of these through a few times: KJV, NASB, and NIV.

All of them teach the same doctrine of Christ. They all proclaim his deity.

I ran across some Congregational Methodists in GA. They were baptistic and even immersed new believers.

Here in Missouri, I heard a UMC lady talking about having the Lutheran minister "confirm" her daughter... I didn't even know that was in Methodist doctrine.

I believe a good majority of UMC's still teach "confirmation". I know some here in our area do, and many of the UMC's my wife and I worked with at the cutting plant did. I believe they can do it cross-denominationally like that also.
