Dichotomy or Trichotomy?

On the nature, or being of man. Which is biblical, the dichotomy or trichotomy of man?

Dichotomy = man is a body and soul/spirit.

Trichotomoy = man is a body, sould, and spirit.

Dichotomy, although I can see the immaterial component of a human as having "soulish" aspects and "spiritual" aspects. I still think these aspects are still just of one immaterial component. It's a middle ground, I guess.

Dichotomy for me. Man is material and immaterial. Soul / Spirit is used interchangeably in Scripture.

Trichonomy

evil spirit has to be cast out so the good spirit comes in.

1Th 5:23¶And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and [I pray God] your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

At least 'tri-'.

I've heard the arguments for both sides, and won't condemn either, but I have to admit that it seems that something died when Adam sinned; he still retained body and soul; and that something was made alive when I was born again; I did not change physically nor did my soul commence existence.

If you would like to argue the material/immaterial angle, I think you would be correct logically. If you want to say that the immaterial is more than one part, I think you must be open to the view that man could be a quatro-cotomy or penta-cotomy, for all the seemingly interchangealble labels for the immaterial side of man.

Let's obey the Bible and ask God when we get to heaven: is that too simplistic?

It's just that simple, eh? So answer this --- is God the same "Person" as His "Holy Spirit?" They are both "immaterial," right? Do you bother to distinguish between the Two of Them? Is so (and I suspect you can), how is it that you can't distinguish between human soul and human spirit?

I'm not saying I can't distinguish between them. I just don't find it compelling to do so.

IMO, the Trinity is not analogous to the constituent parts of a human.

I think those who hold to a tri view should consider a pent view as well.
There are scripture when saying Spirit, it is speaking of the soul, but there are really the 3. IMO.
I believe after being born again, you can not separate the spirit from the soul. but they are 2.

If these two vs. are correct then tri is the correct view.

1Th 5:23*And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Heb 4:12*For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

For Your Consideration

Matthew 10:28 : Don't be afraid of those who want to kill your body, they cannot touch your soul. Fear only God, who can destroy both soul and body in hell.

Ecclesiastes 12:7 : For then the dust will return to the earth, and the spirit will return to God who gave it.

1 Corinthians 5:3 : Even though I am not with you in person, I am with you in spirit...

1 Corinthians 5:4 : ...I will be present with you in spirit...

Luke 1:46,47 : Mary responded,
"Oh, how my soul praises the Lord.
How my spirit rejoices in God my Savior!"

The words soul and spirit seem to be synonymous in the Bible. It's one thing to show discernment between things that differ, but another to force distinctions which are not warranted.
