Basically there are 2 possible opinions.
1) The old testament foretold the punishment which Jesus had to go through simply because God saw what they would do to Jesus, just like he was watching a movie and then he had the prophets write it down. But the problem is that if this is correct then God did not "design" the punishment and this means that the different things which Jesus went through like for example the crown of thorns have no deeper, spiritual meaning and if they hadn't had the idea with the crown then he also would not have worn it.
2) God determined the punishment (crown of thorns, beaten on the back, nails through hands and feet, spear in the side) because it has a deeper meaning and everything which Jesus had to endure had to be fulfilled because everything covers a certain aspect. For example the wounds on the back stand for healing and the crown of thorns stands for emotional suffering and so on.
What do you think?
Is it 1 or 2?
Were all these things necessary or would it also have worked if they had simply hanged Jesus or killed him in another way which was less painful? What if they had poisoned him? Would this also have worked or was it absolutely necessary that Jesus also suffered and not simply died? Was the suffering part of the payment for our sins?
Please try to keep the answers short and near on the question.
