You think people don't know how long their own hair is. Quit being such a busybody and don't be surprised when someone tells you to MYOB. Worry about the log in your own eye.
NEVER had it happen in 14 years of ministry. Oh wait, -- Nope not once.
I only hear MYOB or busybody from those who are offended but the Word of God. I don't push a belief, I simply show them scripture and answer their questions. God has always done the rest. Carnality and "don't judge me, always come from those who WONT understand scripture or who want to rebel. I could careless you personal view. Enjoy it. I will stick to what God does with those to whom truth is revealed and watch them respond as to what scripture states. I know it chaps you but you'll get over it. :wavey:

Allan, Yes I know the Nazarite vow had nothing to do with cultural styles. My point was that it might be why some men may have had long hair. Guess I didn't make myself clear. I think though, if we take the hair length issue literally I also shouldn't braid my hair or wear an ornament in it. I think it's hard to know for sure what length constitues long hair. Shoulder length? Waist length? My friends with short hair are definitely not masculine. And I would never question their love for the Lord based on their hair. Just offering thoughts. Not trying to argue. :saint:
Oh I know your not trying to argue. And yes I think EXACT length (1/2 inch, 3/4 inch) IS legalistic but we DO know what constitutes short and long hair. Just get some of your Youth from Church together and show them some pictures. Then aske them to answer Short or Long not specific but in general. You will be surprised at the mutal concences. However, I have yet to meet a man with shoulder length hair that a woman did not call long. :tongue3:
The brain and ornament thing is about our attitude when Going or Being IN CHURCH. Are we dressing up so others say how beautiful/hansome one may be - or maybe to catch the look of the opposite sex (if single or sometimes due to insecurities within oneself) Our attitude should be when coming to Church is that of bring unto God all glory due Him and to hear from Him.

I agree you should not base ones love for Christ on the length of their hair but on what they will do with Truth once recieved. We show the world and each other our love for God via our obedience to His word. I'm not saying make it a main issue but do not neglect it either as it IS part of the full counsil of God but let God do the convicting. Tell it and let God work.

<snip>This is the very nonsense that Jesus addressed all during His short lifetime. When oh when will we get the message? There are far more important matters in the CHristian walk than whether I wear shoes, trainers, white socks or black.

Love you Jesus! Show me more of Yourself.

Cheers,

Jim
Get a grip Jim, we are speaking of what God said and not what He didn't say. He never said for a man to were sandel it is a shame for him. Nor did He say a woman without makeup is full of glory. But He did SAY = long hair on a woman IS HER glory and short hair on a man is his shame. Is it not funny how they are opposites - woman/long and man/short, hmmmmm..... very interesting Watson, what could it mean??

I agree Jesus show me more of you, but would you also agree that we must live lives unto the glory of God. And that this 'living of our lives' has been as is IN the Word of God to teach all things pertaining to godliness and holiness??
Do we allow Homosexuality because Jesus never preached against it?? God forbid. There was no need to preach against it as it was not a problem in their midst as something that needed to be addressed BECAUSE the people were abiding (at least on this point) in that truth.

If this stuff isn't important why did Paul say it?

And if Paul would be considered a chauvinist then what about Jesus? Jesus didn't seem to have a problem with women. He had a close relationship to Maria and didn't tell her to cover her head and so on. This is hard to understand. To me it seems as if Jesus was much more relaxed than Paul. But if Paul only said what God told him to say then there should be no difference between what Jesus taught and what Paul taught but somehow I have the impression that Paul's stuff is much stricter. Somehow Paul scares me. I really wouldn't want to hang out with him, would you? I would be too scared that he would rebuke me for something.

Yes, Jesus had short hair and it was not to protect him.
All the pictures and art we have of Jesus with long hair came from a period of time in art called 'The Renaissance Period'.
That is simply not true.
...
A remarkable monument was discovered in the crypt four years ago. It is a marble bust, or rather the fragment of a bust, of the Redeemer, with locks of hair descending on each shoulder,24 a work of the fourth century.

It is well known that the oldest representations of the Redeemer are purely ideal. He appears as a young man, with no beard, his hair arranged in the Roman style, wearing a short tunic, and showing the amiable countenance of the Good Shepherd. I give here a characteristic specimen of this type, a statue of the first quarter of the third century, now in the Lateran Museum

This (linkie) is one of the earliest depictions in Christian Roman art.

You might also look at the Late Antiquity icons, the Byzantine murals, Coptic icons, etc. which all date well before the Renaissance, some by more than a thousand years.

You admonish women for having short hair - do you also criticize braided hair or uncovered hair?

Here we go again.....There was a problem in some local churches, and Paul was adressing these problems.

If you choose to interpret these particular scriptures as eternal truth for the churches, that is your choice............Remember, that Paul speaks about a deacon being the husband of one wife. Using the same system of understanding, then Phoebe in Romans 1 was a lesbian; the only way she could be a deacon and the "husband" of one wife.

Let's get with reality.

Phoebe was neither a deacon/deaconess nor was she a lesbian.

Jesus probably did not have a buzzcut (I think that's the term). I'm pretty sure that if he did have a full head of hair, it stopped at the precise point at which a millimeter of an inch longer would have crossed the line into shame.

I imagine the Pharisees had assigned some hair police to watch to see if it grew past that point so they could accuse him of violating Mosaic law.

Wait a minute, the Mosaic law doesn't say anything about long hair, except when Samson had it, and then it was okay.

Oh, I just figured out a way for him to have long hair and pass muster. Jesus could have had it curled into a perm. Long when straight, but above the magic line when permmed.

Oh boy, this is all so confusing. :(
This is exactly what I don't like about the bible. It's so hard to figure out.

GE:
Why project your difficulties upon the Bible? That's what I like about the Bible, that it takes for granted intelligence and human understanding; it's not been called the 'Word' for nothing as it's not been meant for zombi's.

At some point in His career, Jesus for thirty days (or was it forty?) was in the wilderness. Just before that he journeyed perhaps a week; after the time in the desert, He journeyed again for how many days we don't know. He must have had quite long hair by then. We don't read He ever cut his hair. Most likely His hair was long - much longer we today might think. It has had everything to do with the very tough life He had - not even a stone to lay His head upon .... His life of suffering for sin. I don't think haircuts formed a major part of His past-time!

Jesus took our shame upon Himself. If long hair form part of that shame, He had long hair. But it is completely pointless and vain such a question could crop up.

But if hair length doesn't matter why does Paul mention it? This makes no sense!

Either this was Paul's opinion. Then we have a problem because this would mean that Paul inserted his own stuff into the bible and we cannot really be sure what's from God and what's from Paul.

Or Paul simply wrote down what God wanted and this means that God has a problem with long hair.

There are only these 2 options. But the question is what is long hair? When does hair become long?

Is this here considered long for example?

xdx, long hair was an issue back then, as was covering for the head. Don't reduce these things to some formula that has to be worked out. Whether hair is long or short is not the core issue. The core issue is "God, what do you require of me?" That question is answered quite clearly in the two commandments that Christ presented: Love the Lord your God, and your neighbor as yourself. There is no requirement in there to check to see if your neighbor (or God) has long hair, short hair, or no hair. :godisgood:
