Discrimination against Calvinists?

No not by posters on this board, but on a job application. I am looking for a PT job and these days many service oriented jobs use personality assessments, and if you fail the assessment you get a rejection letter regardless of how many years experience you have in the field (note I worked in retail longer before assessments).

These two questions if answered honestly can get points docked off an assessment score.

People are generally good--My answer Strongly disagree
When I look at the world around me I have little hope for mankind.-- My answer strongly agree

You see the doctrine of total depravity says that man is not good, but is totally depraved and so I would answer the question by that standard. I also have little hope for mankind since man is on his way to Hell. Mankind is doomed apart from Christ, and so I have little hope for people in the world who mostly have rejected Christ. I experience rejection everytime I go out witnessing as people these days are blinded to the gospel.

I complained to the company and they are forwarding my comments to senior management. Lord willing they will take out these questions.

It would be difficult to show that this is discrimination against Calvinists. I hate to let the cat out of the bag, but most people do not know what Calvinists believe.

I think that the employer probably has a different definition for “generally good”. For example, there is a sense whereby Mahatma Gandhi would be considered “generally good”, yet another where he misses the mark. Applications for employment typically take a secular stance on those terms.

Having worked with personality assessments, I can tell you that those questions are asked more to gain a profile of your personality than your religious convictions. A person who believes that people are “generally bad” in a secular sense (not in relation to God) would most likely have a difficult time gaining employment as many would consider these to have asocial (maybe even antisocial) traits. Your letter of explanation may clear up that misunderstanding, however it also may be viewed as another barrier.

I hate personality tests, BTW, but I have to say that several times I've been surprised at the accuracy of their conclusions. Good luck in your job search.

Have you thought about how your objection could affect your testimony with those people?

Best to just accept with graciousness that you did not get the job and keep trying.

I took one of those test before being hired at a retail job and answered according to my beliefs and I was hired as an assistant manager. 2 questions are not going to make you "fail" those test. Complaining about those test is more likely going to get you blacklisted than it will that they change those test.

I took the MMPI annually to keep my security clearance active. One of the questions was "Is anyone following you?" I always answered "Yes."

When it was time for the oral interview the Psychiatrist always asked if I was experiencing any anxiety. I would tell him, "no." Then I would laugh and say "What you really want to know is if I am suffering from paranoid delusions, right?"

He then said "Yes, you said somebody was following you."

They are. I am their pastor.

Oh for the love of the rabbit I never said that I failed the personality assessment! I actually scored quite well (despite some questionable questions) and have a interview soon.

When I was younger I would have no problem with personality tests. For some reason, as I get older they seem more difficult .

On my last interview with the psychiatrist I disagreed with some of his assessment. He kept trying to dismiss my objections but I was doggedly determined to correct his false impression.

Finally he said "I think we have a personality conflict."

I replied, "Yes. I have one, you don't" and walked out. I still had my security clearance when I retired.

Why is this discrimination against calvinists? Classical arminians agree with both your points (the second question also falls under the biblical knowledge that most people are on the wide road, rather than the narrow path).

You indicate the questions were related to a service-oriented job; it's obvious to me the questions were generated from a secular viewpoint. Even secular bosses don't want employees who are supposed to be providing a service to customers, but don't like people. There was an episode of "Undercover Boss" where an employee--a waiter--was saying he hated customers. The boss fired him on the spot. Had nothing to do with religion.

Please be careful that you're not so busy looking to be persecuted for your faith, that you'll be surprised when you really are.

It took me a minute, but I think that Evan was quoting himself to show that he did not intend to indicate he failed the test (he said "if" in the original post). I also took the OP to mean that he was not hired because of the assessment (because of the title of the thread as well).

Sprouts is a "Farmer's Market" type store that sells mostly fresh produce. They operate stores in Alabama, Arizona, California, Colorado, Georgia, Kansas, Missouri, New Mexico, Nevada, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas and Utah.

Personally I refuse to set foot in one of their stores. They are, in my opinion, down right unAmerican. In Texas they post 30.06 signs (banning concealed carry of firearms) and 30.07 signs (banning openly carried firearms) and it has been reported they have even asked police officers to leave because they were armed.
