Do all doctrines carry the same weight?

I would say virtually everyone on this board would agree that doctrines such as the Virgin Birth, the sinless life of Christ, his death and Resurrection and his coming again

A friend of mine, Dr L. Duane Brown once explained that doctrines are like a Dartboard.

The Red in the middle would be non-negotiable major doctrines Such as listed in the first paragraph.

then each outlying circle would have less important.

So which circle would you put different doctrines in?

1) Bullseye

2) Circle 1 (closest to bullseye)

3) Circle 2

4) Circle 3

5) Circle 4 (closeth to the edge) Least important doctrine (compared) to the "bullseye" doctrines

RULES: 1) Name of doctrine ONLY
No discussion, NO Bible verses

If you find an interesting doctrine and location

Apparently these are the doctrines we are allowed to rate:
Virgin Birth,
the sinless life of Christ,
his death and Resurrection
His coming again

I put Virgin birth and Second Coming in the 5 circle.
I put His sinless life in the 4 circle.
I put His death and Resurrection in the 2 circle.

Although probably not wanted, I would put three doctrines in the bullseye.
1) You are a wretched sinner going to Eternal Punishment.
2) God offers the gift of salvation from your just punishment.
3) Trust fully in Christ, and rely solely on Him for salvation.

What would I put in Circle 1? Strive to make Christ Lord of your life, try to become Christ-like and serve Him as an Ambassador with the ministry of reconciliation.

Interesting concept:

Bullseye:
The current 66 book Bible we have is God’s
Infallible Word.
Christ died for our sins according to the
scriptures.
Christ was buried and raised from the dead
according to the scriptures
Christ was seen alive after His resurrection
by more than 500 people
The preaching of the gospel is the only
means by which people are saved.

I’ll post more later

peace to you

2) Circle 1 (closest to bullseye)
* Premillennialism.
* The first resurrection precedes the rapture.
* The second appearing precedes the rapture, .
* Everyone's name starts out in the book of life,

Carry weight according to whom or what? All truth is equal. Now, I know that is not what the OP is talking about. But truth is truth. Now that is out of the way, carry on with the discussion.

Yes, after re-reading I see that you did not limit the rating to "biblical doctrines" but I think non-biblical doctrines (i.e. KJVO) would not be consider a "doctrine" and thus be excluded from our dartboard.

I see Canadyjd added one I missed, and a bullseye one to boot, the validity of our 66 book bible as the inspired Word of God.

I disagree with your last item. I believe that your salvation is via Gods Grace. If I had to rely on anyone preaching the gospel …. There is potential to be lost. So what you are saying is that you are putting a condition on salvation vs relying on the Lord.

Like how Dr Mohler has this, as 3 levels of doctrines, core/essentials of the Faith, convictions, and opinions!

I am doing this from the viewpoint of the thief on the cross based on what seems to be "essential". Hence the sparse bullseye.

Bullseye:

  • Divinity of Christ

Ring 1:
  • Salvation by Grace, unearned through Christ's Death and Resurrection (Gospel)
  • Virgin Birth
  • Trinity
  • Christ is Truly God, Truly Man (I.E can't adhere to Arianism)
  • God's Omnipotence, and Omnipresence
  • Canon of Scripture
  • Inerrancy of Scripture
  • Marriage is one man and one woman
  • Women cannot hold Pastor/Bishop/Elder position
  • Pro-Life
Ring 2:
  • Creationism (Not evolution)
  • Women cannot hold Deacon position
Ring 3:
  • Believer's Baptism (I.E no babies)
  • Reformed/Unreformed
  • Cessationism
  • Worship style (CCM/Traditional)
Ring 4:
  • Eschatology (Pre/Post/A mil)
  • Church Government (Congregationalism/Presbytery/Moses Style (whatever that's called I think Cav Chapel has it))
Ring 5:
  • Church potlucks must contain Banana Pudding (Just kidding :Biggrin, but it does help!)
The "Fellowship" line for me is that one must adhere to the Bullseye, and all of Ring 1, but we can disagree about Ring 2, 3 and 4.

The "Salvation" line in my interpretation is that one can be Saved adhering only to the Bullseye, but I won't be fellowshipping at that level due to ignorance. Salvation via only the bullseye doctrine is incredibly rare IMO.
