Is the Black Community of Jackson, Miss wanting to defund the police? If so I'm all for anybody of any color that doesn't want to defund the police creating their own separate police force.

My understanding is most folks in the black community do not want to defund police, but rather increase police. They are suffering the brunt of lawlessness imposed by political elites, mostly rich, white liberals.

I wonder if Thom gave a similar speech criticizing schools that prohibited white students from certain areas (safe spaces?) because their presence would “trigger” some.

peace to you

No, they are not trying to defund the police pe se. The city has not filed for bankruptcy, but for all practical purposes it is beyond bankrupt. The government is inept and likely corrupt. The police force is way understaffed and because of that, the state had to step in and provide additional police services under the direction of the Capital Police. The Capital Police is the force that is supposed to protect the government offices in the Capital. But, they have formed a special district and in that district there is duplicate law enforcement operations. Capital Police, Jackson Police Department, Hinds County Sheriff's Department, and even University Police.

For instance, the University Medical Center had people robbed at gunpoint in their parking lot. This parking lot falls under four different jurisdictions. Four! And the robbers felt safe robbing someone there in the middle of the day. Also, the number of murders in the city are some of the highest per capita in the United States. Jackson, Mississippi, has nation's highest per capita murder rate in 2021 Often the lists don't show Jackson for some reason, but the crime of murder is out of control no matter how you look at it. All the citizens just want someone to do something about it. They don't care if it they are black or white. Most of the citizens are scared to leave their houses at night and the black people are effected by the crime just like everyone else.

And that is just about the crime. Some of the roads are so bad in the city, you can't drive down them unless you drive 20 or 25 miles per hour. A girl died hitting an open manhole a couple of years ago and there are literally potholes in the city where people have planted gardens. I know of several potholes where they just put a orange barrel in them rather than ever fixing them and they have been that way for years. Then there is water and sewer problems. There is open sewage spewing out in several parts of the city and they have been like that for years. And this past year, there has probably been two months in total where people did not have water. Not even enough pressure to flush the commodes in the bathrooms.

That is how bad the problems in the city are. The mayor and the city council are not solving the problems. The citizens of the city are desperate. The state government is just trying to do whatever they can do to help. Sure their solutions may be unfair, but the citizens are thrilled that someone is trying to do something, anything is better than what has been happening for the past ten or more years.
