Medications for simple maladies such as hypertension were not available just a few decades ago.

FDR died after a stroke, a complication of hypertension and chronic systolic congestive heart failure. There wasn't much they could do back then. The physicians advice to Rosevelt, 'take it easy'. Rest ... take a drink ... all while leading a country out of a depression and fighting a world war.

The medications I've been taking for high blood pressure for the last 40 years were not around back then.
No wonder people are living longer!

Drinking, smoking, and overeating will all kill you. Just ask Sir Winston and his 91 years.

Drinking, smoking, and overeating will all kill you. Just as Sir Winston and his 91 years.

I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favour to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them all. Ecc. 9:11

I reckon that long life is not guaranteed to those leading a healthy lifestyle, nor a quick end to the gluttons.
