Does Anyone EVER Win a BB Debate?

I still want to quit this board.

sure, you can say just don't sign in.
but then you got this information about you floating around the "dead air", if you know what I mean.
and somebody smart enough to figure out how to get in using your info can always log in and post things under your name.
don't tell me it can't happen because I had a customer once who couldn't figure out how his friends and his friends' friends were receiving porn using his name until we zeroed in on his email server at home.
somebody hacked it and sent out porn pics and streams from his server.
this board is like trying to quit tobacco.
you got the option to "not post", but then, the temptation to peek in and just loiter around is so strong you do just because you can.
it's like, "heck, I've done quit tobacco for six months, don't see how a smoke or two could suck me back in to the habit".

I enjoy the board, the arguments don't bother me. If someone disagrees with me which is on a regular basis it still don't bother me. I have a life outside of the internet. As you can see in my avatar, my grandson and I are going rabbit hunting.

I'm staff on another board and from time to time we get requests from members to delete their accounts or they ask how they can terminate their account. Usually we don't do this right away, in case they change their mind in a few days.
I think the option usually isn't there because people might make the decision hastily and then regret it.

I know a site where you can completely deactivate your account, but you have the option to come back within three months time without having to start fresh. In other words the deactivation isn't final for three months, until that point it can be undone.

Which is the problem many have on this board. It drives me crazy to see all the personal attacks, and pretend attacks on a false position (straw man). Or a simple denial of one's position without a proper counter-point. Another thing I hate is when someone posts scripture without explanation as if that's supposed to settle the issue, when in reality it IS the issue.

I owe you an apology for two or three posts I have made back and forth with you. Sometimes in written word, I take what you posted the wrong way, and come back with a smart aleck remark that was unjustified. Your posts are civil and reasonable for the most part. I also agree with you about posting Scripture without an explanation or the verse has nothing to do with the issue. It really drives me up the wall in the Calvin debates on both sides, taking Scripture out of context.

Asking a moderator to deactivate your account will do it, or administrator. Thing is, I wish you would reconsider, as you are a cut above the average poster, and I do not completely agree with you on doctrines of grace and sovereignty. I do mostly, except for outreach. However, your posts are well thought out, civil, and to the point. The poison from some of the seminary geniuses on this board that do nothing but stir the pot could drive anyone nuts. Some of the best posters, IMO, were people like Arbo, Biblicist, and SFIC, and either got banned by someone with half their theological knowledge or just threw in the towel.

Not everyone on here who says they are a pastor is a pastor. If some of these clowns talked to their congregations like they post, they would be flying out the front door with a boot following closely behind.

Some of the worst offenders linger and linger. They have it down to an art. I will not mention names, but they will go right to the line they have figured out, then lay low for some period of time, then start again.

Again, please reconsider.

Now you know you did not have to start this thread. You know I always win, because all my posts are Inspired from above. In fact, when I have made my final post, they are going to be bound together and Scripture will have 67 books. LOL

I feel you, the frustration over debates is not uncommon.

On Vbulletin boards that has to be manually done by an Administrator and it may be that only the owner can do some of them unless basically all the permissions to reconfigure the board has been allocated to an Admin. There are several options such as banishment of the User Name which can be from one day to permanent, another can remove the User Name from the Member’s List, another can remove all their posts – but that could confuse the threads, another option could be putting you into a User Group that has limited or no access to post, see the threads, etc., and finally your IP address could be black listed so you couldn’t sign up with a new User Name. On the new Vbulletin software there are even tools to use for those who would attempt to alter or use new IP address.

But hey, the Admin is interactive at the Baptist Symposium and I’m sure we could work something out there for you to escape us if you felt you needed to. :laugh: We’re new and not so busy so I’m sure we could customize a black hole to your liking

As per the Op I see a sharp contrast between philosophical debate/argument and simply arguing. Symposium has a Debate Cage for more formal debates and even have a ring side discussion forum where those who want to vote on who is winning the debate can do so, of course this is still subjective. The purpose of the Cages are to help structure debating which also helps to separate some of the discussions from the tension caused by those who mostly want a good debate as well as to set some rules and guidelines for those who merely want to senselessly argue.

Gina, good points. May I add that debate is also an opportunity to challenge your own personal beliefs.

No one every changes their minds, they get bitter, angry, resentful and at times downright ugly.

They may not change their minds in the midst of a debate, but the debate may cause them to honestly examine their current position. Change may occur at a later time. I have changed my view on the Lord's Day, baptism, expository preaching et. al. partly because of vigorous debate.

I contend that debating and arguing are two different things. The sad thing is, most debates degenerate into arguments.

That is very true. Debating does not have to turn into arguing, but it too often does. Everyone is so sure that they are right and the other person wrong, that they will argue until they're blue in the face and not give an inch. I often add "I could be wrong" to what I say, because unlike some people I Know I don't have all the answers and have no problem admitting that fact.

If there no black and white answers even in scripture, then we have no business calling someone a liar or calling them all kinds of names simply because they disagree with us. Some things in the Bible are clear cut, and only those with closed minds will insist that they are right and all others wrong.

One time I had a discussion with a Catholic friend. We spent 45 minutes debating about our beliefs. There was no arguing or name calling; we quietly and calmly debated the truth of God's word on different subjects, and we remained friends.

I would think that Christians could debate and disagree without anger and name calling, but that, unfortunately, does not often happen. How can we expect unbelievers to come to us for answers when we can't even agree on what those answers are?
