Hey, how about some of you CBFers, liberals, moderates, Open Theists, whatever ya'll call yourselves, stating what your positions are that you believe highlight your differences from orthodox, conservative Baptists, and backed up with what you believe to be your Scriptural support?

I think that would be an interesting basis for discussion.

Thank you rsr, Preach for the info.

I noticed something that the CBF distinctives of priorities and commitments list no scripture references which puzzles me.

On another note, I wonder what they mean when they say that they support "Freedom FROM religion"? Do they meant that they support atheism, Islam, Buddhism, and the like?

You can't have true religious liberty unless there is freedom from religion. It is not that they (or I) approve of atheism, Islam, Buddhism, Mormonism, fundamentalism, Christian Science or any other sort of faith/non-faith system, but we believe that unless someone responds to God's love willingly, then they don't respond at all. They may take on the outward form of religion to escape persecution or get ahead, but they don't come to God with their hearts.

And think about what would happen if a religious group you disagreed with suddenly had a majority and started imposing restrictions on your religious freedom. They could complain that the U.S. was founded on freedom of religion (freedom for their religion) not freedom from religion (freedom from their religion).

This is not new teaching... It is one of the oldest and clearest Baptist distinctives.

You're joking, right? Wasn't the vote over the personnel policies an imposition of a view? Would the CBF welcome baptists who were inerrantists, orthodox theists?</font>
Yes they do. The CBF is full of them.</font>
Can you cite proof, please? And you forgot to answer the first question ;)

The key difference between the CBF and the new SBC is that the focus of the CBF is on cooperation, not orthodoxy. There are inerrantists and right-wing conservatives as well as liberals and universalists. There are pro-gay churches, anti-gay churches, and everything in between.

Was that the vote against affirming homosexuals? Since I'm not a member of CBF, I don't always keep up with every decision. The point I was trying to make might not be clear: I was asserting that the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship exists and a mission organization that does not require adherence to a confession or creed in order to participate in giving money and supporting the mission work.

As far at the question about inerrantists and orthodox theists, the CBF has no rules about keeping people like that out. It is my experience that most Texas Baptists involved in CBF are at least practical inerrantists and traditional theists.

By the way you worded your question, I don't think you recognize that a lot of people opposed the so-called "conservative resurgence" because it violated Baptist polity and was fundamentally dishonest and hateful in the way it treated people who did not go along with the program. People like these may very well be inerrantists and traditional theists, but they dislike the politicalization of God's work.

    Deitrich,
Can you cite actual proof of writing or speaking where this is his position?

No, I'm quite aware of that. Many of these folks are still within the SBC. Many went initially CBF and found that their desire to not tow the CBF party line ostracized them.

Although I wasn't given a clear answer, I asked 6 questions and sent them to the CBF. I started a thread in the theology realm and posted the same questions. I think it is called: Can a person reject the following and be saved? (something like that anyway)

The response I received was that the CBF believes in the triune God and they cooperate to bring the gospel to others. She said that there was no requirement to adhere to any of the issues I presented. I expected such stuff. Given libs like Josh and others on this forum, I have no problem believer her.

Read the theology thread if you like. The CBF is totally apostate and it is totally unscriptural to cooperate with heretics.

You have to ask yourself, what kind of missionary could go out to preach the gospel when the people supporting him/her are not in agreement about gospel essentials? I will tell you. Only a missionary that compromises the gospel and shares platitudes and not truth. In other words, one who lacks integrity.

Did you read what I posted? THE CBF MAKES NO REQUIREMENT AS TO WHO IS A MEMBER. Do you not have a problem with that?

So my original statements are true. Are there people in it who deny the virgin birth and other essential doctrines? Yes. End of discussion.

As I remember, those questions weren’t very clear.

Yep. That’s pretty much the situation…

    Glad you believe her.

People are apostate, not organizations. CBF is a parachurch organization that facilitates mission work and leaves decisions to the churches. The CBF trusts the churches to determine theology for themselves instead of imposing a doctrinal structure on the churches.

You seem to have a much longer list of gospel essentials than the apostle Paul wrote about in Galatians…

Now you just stepped completely over the line and made a blanket condemnation of everyone involved. I hope you realize you are slandering your brothers and sisters in Christ based on an unbiblical standard.

    Lacks integrity?

    Wow.

You made blanket condemnations of people you don’t know based on your response to half-baked questions and a version of the gospel that adds things to the sufficiency of Christ for salvation and you accuse people you don’t know of a lack of integrity.

I have read your posts violently and unfairly attacking the CBF for well over a month now and I’m convinced you have some real personal issues, especially an anger problem. You slant everything toward the worst possible connotation, appearing to look for any evidence that proves your preconceived notions. It reminds me of some of the racists I grew up with who would ignore the character of most black people they knew until they found one who was truly lazy, dishonest and violent and claim that that poor example of a human being was the way all black people are… (I’m not saying you are racist, but the bias is similar.)

Please give it a rest and try to get to know some committed CBF people and listen to their perspective before you condemn.

    How evil!

Personally, I would kind of like them to adopt a confession of faith like the BF&M of 1963, but the group is generally gun shy about doing it because of the way the confessions have been used as a weapon in Southern Baptist life.

Personally, I’m not a member of CBF because the Baptist General Convention of Texas is a strong and viable Convention holding to a non-creedal use of the 1963 confession. I feel very much at home with BGCT and much less at home with CBF. The SBC just makes me sad.

Are there people in the SBC who give lip service to the Bible but ignore what it has to say about falsely judging others and adding requirements to the gospel? Yes.

    I doubt it…
