The word amuse comes from "muse" (to think) and "a" (not)

So the word amuse is "not to think"

Amusement is entertainment geared to make one not think or to be thoughtless.

Does that sound like something the believer should be engaged in?

If we are to Love the Lord with all our heart, mind, soul and strength, then were is the place for amusement?

The believer is never to be thoughtless, and is always to be aware of Christ and the impulse of the Holy Spirit's leading.


Now if the above sounds extreme, or wrong, just remember - it isn't.

T.V. is an "amusement". Try going without T.V., radio, internet, etc. and be totally alone for awhile and see how it feels.

Actually, it is quite exhilarating. I recommend it as much as I do fasting!

It is amazing how many of those things listed are distractions from what may be more necessary.

I agree that we are never to be thoughtless...but I don't think that means we cannot watch the baseball game, or play checkers, or read a novel.

Now the Spirit expressly says that yin later times some will depart from the faith by devoting themselves to deceitful spirits and teachings of demons, 2 through the insincerity of liars whose consciences are seared, 3 who forbid marriage and require abstinence from foods that God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth. 4 For everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving, 5 for it is made holy by the word of God and prayer. (1 Tim. 4:1-5).

In the above scriptures Paul is dealing with those who feel that personal enjoyment/physical pleasure is inherently wrong. He says such teaching is from demons. We can enjoy food, even sweet food, in thanksgiving to God...we can enjoy the marriage bed (It's not JUST for making babies) and give thanks to God for it. I would extend that to other pleasures and leisure as well. You can enjoy laying on the grass imagining that the clouds are dragons...enjoy watching a ball game and wondering that God could make people with such great athletic abilities.

In Dueteronomy 12, God said that when the people had been blessed and their storehouses were full, and they craved meat...they could eat whatever they desired.

God gives us gifts to be enjoyed...the problem comes when we begin to value the gift more than the giver, this idolatry...and unfortunately, it is rampant in the very areas I have mentioned: hobbies, TV, sports, sex, food, play.

It is a common thing for men, says the scriptures, to not enjoy what God has given unto them (Eccles. 6).
