More to the point, however, is the fact that the Psalms were sometimes referred to as “law.” In a discussion with the Jews, in which he contended for his own divine nature, Jesus said:

“Is it not written in your law, ‘I said you are gods’?” (Jn. 10:34).

The Lord is quoting from Psalms 82:6, yet he simply calls it “law.” Thus, the term “law” could embrace the entire Old Testament.

that is what Jesus said and I think I'll take his word on it

thats crazy to say that you can have a shower without water, lets look at the definition of shower.

shower: a bath in which water is showered on the body

look, water is and has to be involed in a shower if water isn't involved then all you are doing is standing there. so the point using the shower doesn't stand

okay, you can't put a boat together without some kind of fastening device, but you can sing without instrumental music.

does singing sound the same with instrumental music. no it doesn't, it is adding extra sound. so it is adding and it is not an aid.

oh your head is messed up.
sorry it is on this subject.

just because you add something does not mean that it is not an aid.

    spagetti with sauce is great!
spagettie with sauce that has garlic in it is great!

they both are great either way.

singing sounds amazing on its own!
singing with music in the background sounds amazing! and compliments the singing.

you are going no where fast with this GWiT - and you still have no scriptural proof.

you still operate off of opinion.

anything that is of faith - is of God. i play my guitar - God's given me the ability to play guitar - i've only been playing 3 years or so. and none of my family besides my grandpa and one great-uncle play guitar - and we live in different provinces.

i praise the Lord with my guitar. I CAN'T SING worth nothing. so am i to stay silent?

or am i to crackle to the Lord? cause its not singing when i do it.

would you like me to crackle for you GWiT? too bad i dont feel like it.

we don't sing to please ourselves, we sing to please God, everyone wants to make it sound better to man's ears, but we are to please God not ourselves. and God is pleased when we obey his Word. you play the guitar, great, I do too, but God tells us to sing, and that is what I do I honor his command and sing, and the definition of sing does not involve musical instruments unless it say to sing with an instrument, and there is no where in the new testament where it says we can use instruments of music, and we can't use the old testament, including psalms, because it was takin away and nailed to His cross. All things that pertain to life and godliness are contain within the scriptures, and we should try our very best to speak where the bible speaks , be silent where the bible is silent ,and call bible things by bible names and do bible things in bible ways.

well if you can sing, sing, when you make melody in your heart i believe people who are mute don't have to sing, you can just say it like your saying a prayer you have to pray vocally, you can pray silently. you certainly can't do it on a musical instrument, because you would be making melody on an instrument, not in the heart

Well according to what I have read about the word sing and all then I can take the verse right above it and say
    Eph 5:18 And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;
I guess since it only specifies wine and tells me to be filled with the spirit then I can drink and get drunk off all the spirits I want to since thats what it says right. Please take the passages in context I in no way or form see this telling a christian that this is how they are to worship in church. Eph 5 19 in context is not a command verse as is stated. Only a person educated in the Church of Chirst methods would think that it is.

    GWIT,

You continue to pick and choose what "arguments from silence" you conclude God makes. Be consistent!

I'm sorry that we keep messing you up with logic and pertinent scripture...those pesky psalms...("nullified" as they may be to you), or revelation (remember the "spiritual harps" you had so much trouble with?)

I think this is worth discussing...it would not be worth discussing if someone said, "I don't like/prefer instruments." This teaching, however, adds to the scriptures...giving us regulations that ARE NOT in the NT (and contradict the OT).

Great advice. Why don't you follow it? This is page 19 of the thread and you haven't followed your own advice. Physician, heal thyself.

The NT is silent about musical instruments. The OT is not silent. What should that tell us? It should tell us that God didn't think it was important enough to say something about it in the NT. It should tell us that God didn't think it important enough to divide over. It should tell us that God probably doesn't want his Word used to defend unscriptural, man-made traditions.

I don't really care if the CoC uses or doesn't use instruments. Do it all to the glory of God. But, try as may, you can't turn your preference into a "thus sayeth the Lord" commandment.

Worship is more than a song anyway. Worship is so much bigger than just music, it floors me that so many make it JUST about music... accompanied or acappella, rock or classical, vocal or instrumental. It all boils down to this: Anything you put before God is an idol. As long as the music you sing is a tool you use to glorify Him, to my mind it "matters not" how you use it. When He is lifted up, He draws all men to Himself.

okay so your saying that jesus was wrong when he called the psalms law, and when the inspired writer said that the law was taken away. and the whole book of revelations is symbolic, believing that they are literal harps is just as bad as beliving there will be literal 7 horned beasts, and so on. actually, instruments aren't found in the new testament scriptures so who is adding here ,me, where i say we should just sing to fufill the commandment of God or ,you, who say that God will accept it if i want to add something to make it sound better?

"Receive one who is weak in the faith, but not to disputes over doubtful things. For one believes he may eat all things, but he who is weak eats only vegetables. Let not him who eats despise him who does not eat, and let not him who does not eat judge him who eats; for God has received him. Who are you to judge another’s servant? To his own master he stands or falls. Indeed, he will be made to stand, for God is able to make him stand. One person esteems one day above another; another esteems every day alike. Let each be fully convinced in his own mind. He who observes the day, observes it to the Lord; and he who does not observe the day, to the Lord he does not observe it. He who eats, eats to the Lord, for he gives God thanks; and he who does not eat, to the Lord he does not eat, and gives God thanks. For none of us lives to himself, and no one dies to himself. For if we live, we live to the Lord; and if we die, we die to the Lord. Therefore, whether we live or die, we are the Lord’s. For to this end Christ died and rose and lived again, that He might be Lord of both the dead and the living. But why do you judge your brother? Or why do you show contempt for your brother? For we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ. For it is written: "As I live, says the LORD, Every knee shall bow to Me, And every tongue shall confess to God."" Romans 14:1-11, NKJV.

you have no idea what it means when the NT says that do you.

the carnal oridinances - the traditions of men - that is what was nailed to the cross - not God's own law.

Jesus used a different word when he quoted the psalms - he said "your law"

he didn't say "the law" or "my Father's law" or "law of moses"

he said "your law" there is a difference.

Jesus (the Word) did not come to make the law (the Word) pass away.

He did not come to make himself pass away. He is the Word.
"the law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul."

"a house divided against itself will fall"

Jesus is the law - Jesus is the Word. He did not come to grab a hammer and nail and nail himself to the cross.

we essentially nailed Jesus to the cross with our sin - and with our carnal ordinances and traditions of men.

"a house divided against itself will fall"

once again I don't know about you but I don't do any of the things you mention to worship God, but hopefully we both believe that we do SING to worship God. and no they were not called synagogues, that is where Jews met and paul went there often to convert Jews.

the early christians met in homes - met where-ever.

but on the sabbath - they always went to the synagogue. because the sabbath is part of the ten commandments. so they desired to obey God in keeping the sabbath on the seventh day of the week - just as God commanded them to do.
    ---

i try to sing to worship God. i also play my guitar to worship God.

because the Holy Scriptures do not condemn the usage of instruments in worship.
    ---

the OT is the base of which the NT operates. God is the base of all scripture.

so i refer to the OT and the NT because they are so intertwined its unbelievable.
can't have one without the other.

so refering to the OT for how to worship is legit.
    ---

now go and have fun singing. i will worship with my voice and the gift of playing guitar that God has given me.

i will play it in the streets
i will play it in the churches
i will play it in my home
i will play it wherever the Lord leads me to play my instrument while i try to sing.
    ---

get over it GWiT - just because the NT doesn't mention it and the OT does - does not mean that it has been omitted.
    ---

    God's peace and blessings all.

    Dustin,
You've ignored me twice. I'm going to keep posting this until you stop ignoring it.

Why don't you follow your own advice? The NT is silent about musical instruments, but the OT is not. Thus, your "argument from silence" does nothing but add commandments to Scripture that aren't there.

I don't really care if the CoC uses or doesn't use instruments. Do it all to the glory of God. But, try as may, you can't turn your preference into a "thus sayeth the Lord" commandment. Further, the CoC man-made tradition is not a commandment.
