Who, here on the forum, considers it acceptable to drink wine or ingest some other intoxicant that is not prescribed by a doctor?

Oh boy! Here we go again. :BangHead:

For the record, I am imbibing a glass of wine as I write this post. I am also a social drinker of beer and wine. I rarely drink hard liquor because I don't care much for it.

I do not drink alchohol, and consider it very dangerous. But I have christian friends that do, and if someone tried to tell them that it is absolutely forbidden by scripture, I will rally to their defense.

I really don't drink, though I may sip a little wine or beer. In my lifetime I doubt I have had more than 15-20 glasses of any alcoholic beverage. Yet, it is a freedom.

You'll find a good many of us no longer hold to a complete temperance position. Such a thing isn't scriptural.

(gasp, the last communion I took part in used REAL wine (and a common cup!))

This topic has driven over again, and again, and again here. If you want to see the horribleness which this forum descends into just do a search for one or two threads with this topic. I know it (hopefully) isn't your goal to open a can of worms but you've just lobbed a live grenade into our midst.

Drinking alcohol is not prohibited in the Scriptures. Getting drunk is. I don't drink because of my calling, but will not condemn a believer who enjoys libations from time to time. :)

What he said. The fact is that God is going to serve us the finest, fermented wine at the marriage supper of the Lamb (Isa. 25:6), so I figure drinking alcohol is not a sin.

That said, I will have a couple of beers tonight as I watch my Vikings get crushed by the Packers.

Hmmmm

I think that the question isn't if God served or is going to serve intoxicants.

It is a question of those who have no hope.

Am I to assume those of you who posted that you take an non-doctor prescribed intoxicant are without hope?

I'll answer the question, but I need a beer first... just a sec... ;)

I think this is a Romans 14 matter... weaker vs. stronger; to eat or not eat meat. I'll let you decide which group Paul refers to as the 'weaker'...and honestly I think that could change depending on the circumstances. Sometimes the weaker ones are the ones who insist on their convictions of liberty to drink above the unity and even safety of the body.

That's funny because I thought the question was:

Who, here on the forum, considers it acceptable to drink wine or ingest some other intoxicant?

Now you are changing the tone of the thread by assuming people that have a drink now and again are "without hope".

1. Doctors don't prescribe intoxicants. They prescribe medications.
2. Beer and wine is not a product one obtains with a prescription.
3. I have a blessed hope.

Drinking imo can be dangerous for those who seem to be addicted from the first drink. It makes people let their defences down when they drink to much. Which isn't a good thing.
I read that most men in prision are there because they had been drinking when they commited their offense. I have drank but not anymore. I gave it up not because of addiction but because of medical conditions. I still take wine in celebration of commuion.

Christ drank wine but He was never drunk. It's not sin to drink but it is to allow it to take control of your will.

The Georgia Baptist Convention's Shorter College has been in the news recently for its imposition of a "morals clause" on professors.

To avoid being fired, professors must now pledge:

I will abstain from serving, from using, and from advocating the use of alcoholic beverages in public

I have read and agree with the Personal Lifestyle Statement and will adhere to it in its entirety while employed at Shorter University. I understand that failure to adhere to this statement may result in disciplinary action against me, up to and including immediate termination.

Why didn't you post the ENTIRE portion about alcohol from Shorter?

I will not use alcoholic beverages in the presence of students, and I will abstain from serving, from using, and from advocating the use of alcoholic beverages in public (e.g. in locations that are open to use by the general public, including as some examples restaurants, concert venues,
stadiums, and sports facilities) and in settings in which students are
present or are likely to be present. I will not attend any University
sponsored event in which I have consumed alcohol within the last six
hours. Neither will I promote or encourage the use of alcohol.
