Finally... something we can agree on. You are 100% correct. One cannot ignore what is not there.

But your argument for alcohol in the life of a Believer proves one can argue against what is there.

Look at Proverbs 23:31 again... no, let's look at verses 29-35:

29Who hath woe? who hath sorrow? who hath contentions? who hath babbling? who hath wounds without cause? who hath redness of eyes? 30They that tarry long at the wine; they that go to seek mixed wine.

Here, Solomon is showing that those who tarry long at the wine have many woes to come upon them.

    But notice the next verse:

31Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth his colour in the cup, when it moveth itself aright.

Solomon did not say just drink a little here, nor did he say don't tarry long at the wine. No, he gave a clear command to stay away from fermented wine. No 'you can drink one glass and no more,' No 'stretch it out over a long period,' No 'make sure you eat something with fermented beverage' commands at all. His clear command was stay away from fermented beverage. Abstinence was the counsel he gave.

He goes on to warn that if one does drink alcoholic beverage, it has a deadly effect:

32At the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder.

What is that deadly effect? Spiritual? Physical? Emotional? It could be one or all three. Solomon had previously wrote in the 20th chapter:

1Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.

There is a deadly bite in alcohol. It destroys cells in the body and attacks organs that are vital to a healthy life. It robs children of food, it breaks up homes and marriages, it destroys jobs, and in the end, it kills as it did my oldest brother.

Solomon went on to tell more of the ungodly things alcohol would cause people to do:

33Thine eyes shall behold strange women, and thine heart shall utter perverse things.

Man does utter perverse things when man says God allows alcohol in moderation. Man does utter perverse things when man accuses the Lord of drinking alcohol. Man does utter perverse things when man denies the Written Word of God and its command to abstain.

34Yea, thou shalt be as he that lieth down in the midst of the sea, or as he that lieth upon the top of a mast.
35They have stricken me, shalt thou say, and I was not sick; they have beaten me, and I felt it not: when shall I awake? I will seek it yet again.

Alcohol destroys the ability to recognize truth. That is evident through man's defense of alcohol.

We both agree that drunkennes is wrong. That's what that passage is speaking of.

Wow --- with all of this arguing back and forth, I think I need a drink.

    Sorry, couldn't resist.

Verse 31 is a command to abstain from alcohol, not from drunkenness.

I see you are still choosing to ignore the truth written therein.

I'm sitting here with another 'hurricane' that I made, from a mix that I brought home from New Orleans in 2004, plus the rum, and I see Slick is still pulling more of his hair out. I tell you, this drink mix does taste old, but the whole big glassful does help me forget this miserable life of mine for one more day, just as Proverbs says.

I'm not trying to get you booted. I'm simply trying to get you to admit your true belief, that you have been skirting this whole time, and admit that you think that most of us here, and the vast majority of Christians throughout the ages, are hell-bound for this belief.

Btw, does it simply apply to those of us who do drink and don't think it's wrong, or does it also apply to those who don't drink, but still don't think it's wrong? If it's the latter, then I see from this poll that you, and the other 17% who believe it's a sin, will be a pretty scant crowd in heaven.

SFIC may find out that there will be a higher population than he expects. Hope he wasn't looking for a "small town" feel!

I dunno', but recently saw a "three-page limit" thread in the "Current events" forum reach 28 or 29 pages, if my memory serves.

The Moderator (actually, one of the Administrators) closed it without notice, without even giving the customary "Three page" warning. :tear: :tonofbricks:

And I was hoping to see it get to 30 pages, too.

Abd vv 29-30, which you don't seem to want to acknowledge, refer to drunkenness. Likewise, the following verses refer to drunkenness.

Also helps my post count!
