Drivers license for teens

Eight states/Commonwealths allow teens as young as 14 to obtain a drivers license.

Do you think that is too young?

Some S/C state how many passengers a young driver may have
Some S/C state how long you must have a permit before taking a test
Some S/C have restrictions on nighttime driving.

If you were to write the law as to teenage driving (under the age of 18)
what would it be?

Depends on where you live.
In farming communities the kids learn to drive the tractors on their property very early. Not much to bump into.
My grandson drove my lawn tractor as a kindergartener. He’s a great driver now in northern rural Maine at 16 y.o.

I live along the busy I95 eastern corridor.
With congestion and high traffic volume along with unforgiving drivers, I didn’t feel comfortable letting my kids drive til they were 18… even then there were some strict rules about what roads they could drive and when they could drive, and who they could be with.

My oldest daughter is almost 40. When she visited us recently she took the long way to our house, that was what she was taught to do… and she still does it!

When I was growing up in Kentucky the age to start driving was 16. That year I became a Jr. in HS. I think that worked out fine but we had Driver's
Ed in HS. I think that was effective because for one thing they showed pictures of the aftermath of bad accidents. That taught me to be careful
and follow the law. If that's not offered today maybe I would increase the age to 17.

...they showed pictures of the aftermath of bad accidents. ...7.

One of my pet peeves is using the term "accident". An accident is an unfortunate event that could not be prevented. The correct term is "collision". 98% of all collisions are preventable -usually by the one responsible and even at time - by the victim

I think 15 learners permit, 16 regular license is about right. My son is 11. He gets on the 100 HP tractor. Cranks it. Hooks up the plows, including a 16 ft cutaway harrow. Drives it almost a mile down the road. Plows for a few hours. Brings it to shop. Fuels it. Parks it in barn.
He would be fine right now with a driver's license.

One of the requirements from me for my kids to get a DL was being able to drive with a manual xmission. Both in their 50s today.

One thing I would advocate is a “daylight only” license to give new drivers a few years of practice before dealing with night driving. So a progression from “with a Licensed Driver” to “Daylight Only” to “Unrestricted”. (I am not sure about ages, maybe 14, 16 and 18).

NY State under 18 - you can only drive from Sunup till sundown.
Only exception is to go to a credit course activity at school at night
(and that does NOT include going to the BB - game - even if you are on the team.
