DSL ?

A few years ago I and a friend of mine had AOL and both of us were charged for a porno site we did not sign up for. It two months to get the porno site off my credit card. After that I cancelled AOL. I do not like any company having my credit card number and billing me automatically. I like to have a paper bill sent each month.

 

Just upgraded to 3mb cable modem service. It rocks.

The Baptist Board has never been so speedy.

I had a throttled version that was only 384kbs

 

My firewall was getting hit around 50 times an hour when I was on AOL.

I get hit about 3 times a night since I went to DSL.

Drop the MacAfee firewall.

Go with Zone Alarm (free firewall, download from Zone Labs or DOWNLOAD.COM ). Or even use the Windows firewall that is all beefed up in Service Pack 2.

Just drop the MacAfee. It is not a very good one. I didn't care much for their anti-virus either...after I got hit... TrendMicro's PC-cillan is top-ranked. It doesn't have a firewall, but Zone Alarm is one of the best.

A friend of mine works for Apple doing the graphics for movies such as Spielberg, etc. He told me that I should not need a firewall because any good ISP should have one. All he has is McAfee antivirus. He gets about 150 spam each day. I have a Linksys wireless encrypted router and McAfee antivirus and have had zero problem since. Since getting a router and McAfee I have not had one virus. But before I did get about 100 when the big one hit about one yar ago when I had Norton Systems Works. Five of the files were as big as 84 megs each. Now I have McAfee and no problems.

 

Should not need a firewall? Boy, talk about faith in the goodness of mankind...

I've been hit too hard and too often to ever go online unprotected again. And it drives me nuts when I go straighten out someone's computer who does not take precations, only to have them come back in a couple of months with it in worse shape because they went right back without safegaurds.

Please have your friend name those 'good' ISP's...

If aol is on the list then I'd stop listening to him for computer advice.

 

You don't really need a software firewall if your router is one.

Hopefully thats what he meant.

My router has a NAT firewall, so the addresses of my computers are not visible to the internet, only the router's IP is visible. I still run a firewall on my Windows machine, mainly because its my work laptop and gets hooked up to about 3 or 4 different networks on a regular basis, and I like to know whats going on.

I even have firewall software running on my Solaris Machines, which seems a bit much, but I'm careful like that.
