I've been away for a while.

But I have noticed one thing different, the use of the term Dude for another member seems to have increased quite a bit.

Interesting, since to some it's use is considered prejorative and to others it's not.

Maybe context is everything.;)

This thread wil probably get deleted as unnecessary but what you’ve noticed is just the tip of the iceberg

I have always used "dude". Guess it shows my age.....not quite ancient but getting there.....dude. :Biggrin

Never heard "dude" being considered prejorative. I have seen "kid" used that way.

It's not part of my normal conversational vocabulary and never has been. So I guess I'm already ancient.

But it seems like it's used here most of the time to talk down to or correct others. It appears to me that most of the times I have seen it used here, it was meant to be disrespectful, but still abide by Board rules.

Just my opinion.

It might be. Maybe I need to see who has been talking down to me.

I wonder if some think my use of "dude" is talking down. I guess it doesn't matter (I'm not that old, but a bit too old to change how I talk).

But assumptions can be made with online dialog. Last year a member had an issue with people calling him "brother". He said they don't do that where he was from.

I have started using it some lately. I picked it up from my preacher a few weeks ago. A wasp landed on the podium and he looked down and said, "Hello, dude." And then he killed it. Just sort of stuck with me since then. :)

Rather dude then dud.

I have used it in terms of one who is a novice, or unskilled, but not meaning it as a put down.

Nah, dude.

It was very common in the 80's. Even made it in an Aerosmith song. It (for those of us now in our 50's) just meant a guy.....you know.....a dude. It's like "bro".

In the late 1800's to early 1900's it meant an urbanite. That's how we get "Dude Ranch".

Before we know it, a new so-called Bible "translation" (or paraphrase) will begin to use the word "dude" in place of "brother."

Or should it be "dudes and dude-etts?" ;)

There are a lot of ‘things’ different that you don’t see, like the absence of many posters who didn’t take their gruel willingly, heh. Hard to notice ‘things’ like that…unless someone like me keeps bringing it up. Never forget, as they say.
