Eating Red Meat May Shorten Life Span

I imagine many of you will say, "I'm not giving up red meat!"

Diets high in red meat and in processed meat shorten life span not just from cancer and heart disease but from Alzheimer's, stomach ulcers and an array of other conditions as well, a U.S. National Cancer Institute study has found.

In fact, reducing meat consumption to the amount eaten by the bottom 20 percent seen in the study would save 11 percent of men's lives and 16 percent of women's, according to the study.

..."This fits together with the findings of the American Institute for Cancer Research and the World Cancer Research Fund and the American Cancer Society, which recommend limiting the consumption of red meat," added Sinha, who is a senior investigator with the nutrition epidemiological branch in the cancer epidemiology and genetics division at the Cancer Institute. "This is something new in the sense of mortality."

...Last year, U.S. National Cancer Institute researchers reported that a quarter-pound hamburger or a small pork chop eaten daily could put you at increased risk for a variety of cancers. The message from the latest study echoes that finding: The more red meat and processed meat you eat, the greater your risk for dying of cancer

It seems like that anything that tastes good or appeals to me is bad. I love pork chops, steaks, hamburgers, pizzas, hot dogs, mashed potatoes, french fries, & ice cream.

The one thing I especially can't understand is why the healthy meals cost more than the unhealthy meals. If I were selling TV dinners, or any food product & I had a reduced fat, low carb, or reduced calorie version, I would try to sell it cheaper to encourage people to eat healthy.

The price of those South Beach Diet or Healthy Choice TV dinners are more expensive compared to the stuff that's unhealthy. I can buy a Totino's pizza for $1.25 rather than spending $2.50 to $3.00 for a healthy (smaller portioned) meal.

If these companies were to reverse their thinking, they would probably sell more. Being that we live in a time where we have to watch what we spend, I will buy whichever is the cheapest.

I've had to cut out a lot of things due to health problems and the lack of money. The only meat I eat now is chicken since it's the only meat I can afford.

It's great to eat anything in moderation. No where in New Testament to we find food prohibitions except "maybe" meat with the blood left in it or that which has been sacrificed to idols. Both are debatable. But to tell people what they can and cannot eat is nothing short of legalism.

 Yeah, remember when eggs were bad for you (caused cancer, high blood pressure, ect..) then it was just the yolks, then they decided the whole egg was good again; just like bread causes cancer. So let us not forget the multitude of foods out there that have been desigated a 'health hazard' due whatever group was over it at the time and then a few years later, (through various 'other' studies) proved they are actaully good for you and unhealthy.

The interesting thing about both sides of these studies is that moderation is actaully the key to whether it is good or not for 'your' body and not through some chart that doesn't take all the information into account. Even scripture backs this up.

God gave us all herbs and animals to eat and He thought it good to do. Who am I to say He was wrong?

Well, he didn't give us the animals to eat until after the Flood, and we will not be eating them in heaven.

The usual reactions I expected are here. Why don't you people be more unpredictable? :tongue3:

What about the stewardship of our bodies? And our bodies being temples?

This is not about not eating meat but about red meat. And it's not about anyone telling anyone what to do.

Btw, 1 Tim. 4.3 does not apply here because that passage is about telling people to abstain due to ascetic practices. (I wish more Christians would notice that, because there is a strain of ascetism entering the church).

Does the bible make a distinction between red, and any other kind of meat ? What are "cattle" in scripture ? What "beasts" are forbidden ?

Are you adding to scripture ? Twisting scripture to fit a lifestyle that you think everyone should follow ?

And you say this...

"What about the stewardship of our bodies? And our bodies being temples?"

Then you say this....

"...it's not about anyone telling anyone what to do."

Please, Marcia.

Agreed Bro Curtis.

Beef was allowed and good under the OT laws given by God. That is the kicker of the Christian walk. What does God say and not certain people with lopsided reports?

Also Marcia, you said that we were only allowed to eat meat after the flood, and you are correct. We are allowed to eat meat. The world that was pre-flood was destroyed and God introduced an new diet to mankind. God never once in all of scripture says says eat only veggies, or only meat, or only... (you get the picture). In the NT he even removes the stigma of what was considered unclean to allow to be eaten by the Jews. Moderation of what we eat is the God given diet to man and all things are good if it is recieved with thanksgiving.

What???!!! Where are you getting this from? I merely posted an article about the dangers of eating red meat. Everything else I said is fact, sucha as God not telling men to eat animals.

It is a fact also that the animals people ate until recently did not have hormones and other stuff injected into them.

Who is telling anyone what to do? I'm asking questions and making points. Apparently, you don't want to answer except to make a caustic comment.

What about stewardship of our bodies and our bodies being temples? If you don't want to answer, fine.

Allan, with all due respect, where do I say anything in this thread about not eating meat?

I guess God told us to eat poison then.
My great grandmother died the first year I was married, always ate red meat, she was 99. Well, if I live that long, who cares.
What did the bible say about those who forbid you to eat meat.(or just plain tell you not too)

What about the stewardship of our bodies?
what about scripture?
If eating meat was bad would God have told us to eat it? If eating meat is bad, then God told us to do bad.
If you want to be a vegetarian then do it, but stop trying to make it sound scriptural and the rest of us are wrong to eat meat, which God gave for food.

Your saying, and have said before, that we should net eat meat. Otherwise your statement from the op makes no sense and is out of place.

But to tell people what they can and cannot eat is nothing short of legalism.
We've been badgered with this brand of legalism for some time now here on the BB.

I also meant no disrespect Marcia.

However my comment to you about eating meat came from your reply to an earlier post of mine:
Well, he didn't give us the animals to eat until after the Flood, and we will not be eating them in heaven.
I simply agreed, that God did tell us to eat meat and that God also instituded the eating of meat that we today call - red meat. :)

As for heaven, we will not reside there forever but will come back to earth for the Mil-reign and even longer after that. Yet even then we have no record of what God might have for us to enjoy up there (personally I'm hoping for batter-fried pork chops :) ) However the fact is we actaully don't know for sure what we will be eating, though there is definately indication fruit will be on the menu but it tells us nothing more even though there will be a feast. And apparenetly these bodies will be fully capable of eating even things like fish (as with Jesus eating fish with His disciple by the sea).

This is news?! Who issued this communique - the Department of the Blatantly Obvious? This doesn't mean you should give up red meat entirely, just eat a balanced diet and do plenty of exercise - the usual common sense stuff.

In other news, bears in sylvan settings don't use public washrooms, elderly German in Vatican admits to being a bit of a Papist, and film at 11:sleeping_2:
