EMAIL SCAM WARNING - Windows 10 Upgrade

Apparently, some folks are receiving emails that tell them it's time to upgrade to Windows 10; click on this link.

HOWEVER, when you do so, the link installs ransomware (a program that encrypts your files) and tells you to contact someone to pay to have your files released. So far, the tech sites I watch indicate they haven't found a way to release the files other than paying the scammers for the release code.

You should NOT receive an email for your Windows 10 upgrade; it should appear as a notice on your desktop. If you receive such an email, DO NOT click on the link.

Ok, you had me worried there for a second. I have an icon on my taskbar asking me to upgrade. I'm pretty sure it's legit.

Yes, that is an automatic thing MS does. Click it and you will be given option to reserve windows 10 if you haven't already.

Something similar happened to me once a few years ago, because I hadn't yet learned how to use a computer (still haven't) and was so naïve about how computers worked, I believed everything that popped up on the screen.

Cost me all my files and a ton of money to get fixed.

I don't get that email, but I do get the calls from the "technical support center" who tell me they've detected a problem with my computer and if I'll just enter a code into my computer for them, they can fix it over the phone for me.

When I have time, I like to mess with them. The longest I've ever kept one of them on the phone is about twenty minutes.

Meh. I'd recommend Kaspersky Total or BitDefender Total before Norton....

Yes, Kaspersky is the Russian one - but I haven't been hit by a virus in switching to it a few years ago.

I don't know about the new Windows 10. Spyware. That is not a good sign.
