Every time I read one of the several editions of the ESV in my collection I find myself thinking one of several thoughts, like with the NASB and the NKJV and the NRSV what is the purpose of the ESV? Why do premium binders like Cambridge and Allan have such an investment in the ESV and why do some Bible lovers gush over the ESV as if it is in a class all of it's own?

When people state that the NASB is "wooden" with the inference that the ESV has that licked I can only just scratch my head.

I think it shows the NIV is much easier to understand than the ESV. I suppose that is the point.

My pastor has the observation ofn the ESV that its not quite as literal as the Nasb, so those desiring most literal would not be intetrested, nor as smooth and fluent as either the Niv/Hcsb, so it seems to be the product of large "push" from its publisher and some reformed/cal authors that really like it!

seems to be becoming that primary version to the reformed/cal churches, much as Niv became to the "new evangelicals"...

I wouldn't say too far, but a bit of confusion here and there. For example, 2 Timothy 3:17, the Greek anthropos is now "servant" in the new NIV.

When is anthropos ever translated "servant"? Paul had a range of words he could have used for "servant."

Did their use of the term chosen reflect any inherit "agenda?"

that is what bothers me , is when words are chosen that seem to reflect more of what the translators think should have been written, as to what was actually written!

Well, because in 1 Timothy 6:11 they translate anthropos as "man." I see no reason why they couldn't do the same.

This is what I mean by confusion.

No translation has it perfect. Going from Greek to English accurately is impossible in some cases. Niv uses sinful nature, for Sarx, NASB and most others say flesh. The problem is, most readers don't do a word work up, and assume flesh is a reference to our human body. Which is amazing as Paul said he was no longer in the flesh, and said in two places it was absent in a living believer in some instances. So, the NIV with their conceptual, get the gist, of it focus, did the better service.

But, in 1 john 3:9 the NIV adds a tense rule after the conjunction, turning an absolute negative, into a negative with exceptions.

Another example is the word Agapao. How many are taught that it means 'god's love'? Which will be problematic if anyone ever reads a greek septuagint, as it is usec for a rape, in the LXX. So its been rendered into this warm fuzzy cliche, and the meaning lost to most.

If you read casually, the NIV is awesome. If you are going to dig into the words, the NASB is better for that. You may not know of the NET Bible. Bet a free copy at bible.org, but if you pay the 20 bucks you get all their 60K+ translator notes. Those are respected enough they have several endorsements from other bible translating teams.

I mention it because it combines the NASB's approach, and the NIV'S and puts it in informal contemporary english. Its an easier read than the NIV, even and accurate to the words as well. When I am studying, I have LOGOS open to the nasb, to use its interlinear, with the niv and net for checks and balances.

To gripe, as some do, about a word being different, when it clarifies the meaning of the literal word, is pedantic nonsense.
