European illegals

There is a lot of talk here about helping Irish illegals in the US to get some kind of special treatment. There are about 35,000 of them. There is a delegation there now and apparently Paul Ryan has been persuaded.

Is there any argument for treating European illegals differently than others?

I get a little bothered by this. Before I became a citizen, even as a legal resident, everything was a hassle. I have seen good, hard working immigrants doing everything right be greatly hassled trying to do the paperwork to become a permanent resident or citizenship. It took 40 months to process and reams of paperwork (and €1000) to gain citizenship.

People are deported from here all the time.

And yet the government want Irish illegals granted some type of special status in the US?

I was speaking of the Irish government. I haven't checked it out, but according to an Irish news source Paul Ryan is on board to help out the Irish illegals.

Indeed, Congressman Ryan, whose positions on economic and social issues place him firmly on his party’s right wing, was moved by the persistent entreaties of the Irish Lobby for Immigration Reform. He is now a firm supporter of immigration reform legislation – passed by the US Senate and stalled in the US House of Representatives – which would benefit the undocumented Irish. Congressman Ryan, who is proud of his Kilkenny ancestry, has affirmed that the efforts of Irish people based in the US, such as Billy Lawless and Ciaran Staunton, and Irish politicians, like Senator Mark Daly, played a significant part in persuading him.

Nope.

Illegals are just that, illegals. Country of origin doesn't matter at all.

To be fair most of the Irish people disagree with the notion of special treatment. The families of the illegals make all kinds of noise about how they can't come home to visit, even if a family members die. The general attitude is that 'yes, they can come home - they just can't go back!'

These people chose to break the law. They is certainly not the danger of coming home to suffering and hardship. They didn't go to America because they had no work or they were suffering or whatever. They simply went because they wanted to.

If anything I think there ought to be less leniency when it comes to sending European illegals home.

Well the portion about Ryan supporting amnesty is right I was just unaware that it would benefit anyone other than those who have come across the southern border.

I don't believe they should be treated any differently. But I was very involved in the Irish-American community for a few years and it was my experience that the difference between Irish illegals and Mexican border criminals is that the Irish just come for a couple of years and then go back.

Of all the Irish guys I knew, only a couple of them stayed.

The Mexicans, on the other hand, come and stay. They never bother to learn the language or assimilate. They just come to collect welfare and turn our country into the same armpit they just left.

Most of the Irish guys I knew just came over to work for a couple of years, make a little money, party, and then go back. To all the ones I knew, it was more like an extended Spring Break than actual immigration.

So, while they're both illegal and they should both be prosecuted, I don't have contempt for the Irish the way I do for the Mexicans, because I know the Irish aren't doing it to be malicious.

I disagree with your premise. While what you say may be true for some there are plenty of Irish who knowingly move to the US to cheat the system and settle in. While they may come over with the intent to stay for only a couple of years, they find it so nice they just decide to stay.

I love the Irish - so much in fact I wen't through all the hassle and expense of acquiring citizenship. I have been here twenty years and love it here.

But lawbreakers are lawbreakers, Just because they smell nice, look nice, and speak English with a cute accent doesn't change the fact that they are criminals.

Unless a family has people there the Irish feel the same away. The Irish abuse the system so much that all Irish visitors are viewed with suspicion by immigration (I am not sure of the new agency name). As a result there is more hassle for all Irish visitors.

These folks are lawbreakers. They need to be treated as such. ALL illegals are the same, no matter how much we might 'like' one particular group.

When Irish leaders call for change they need to first examine their own harsh immigration policies.
